Mayor Appoints Cityguard Post As widely
expected, Mayor Winifred has named Corrner of the Blactalons to fill the post of CityGuard prefect.
The announcement was seen as a formality since Corrner has been acting as city enforcer by virtue of his position as head of the Blactalon Mercenary Company. Blactalon was awarded the contract to patrol the merchant quarter and Whitestone section last Uktar. Their presence in the city has resulted in a drop in crime and increased trade through the Feast of the Moon.
Most Aldermen on the city council were in favor of such an appointment and the usual rancorous tone of Board of Regents meetings was noticeably absent. Three remaining posts on the city payroll are yet to be filled and the process is not expected to be as smooth as this one. Winifred is expected to spend considerable political capital installing well-connected dalesmen to patronage positions.
Corrner is a veteran of the Sember wars with long ties to the Dales region. His political ties to Mayor Winifred were also seen as a factor in the appointment. The post carries a two-year commission that will run through century's end.

Death of Olmer Keln Remains a Mystery Nine months after the apparent murder of Olmer Keln the circumstances surrounding his murder are no less murky. There were no arrests at the time and none appear forthcoming. Keln was first reported missing when he failed to arrive for the Midsummer Festival in which he was to play a prominent roll. The venerable citizen was to be presented with the Certificate of Mieliki as tribute to his years of service in the Ranger class. Two days after the Festival his housekeeper discovered his mangled remains on his sprawling estate. It was nearly impossible to identify the body in its mutilated condition. The official cause of death was animal attack.

Flooding at River Arkhen A merchant with Tureen Trading company was swept into the flooding Arkhen River yesterday. Mahns of Saerloon was traveling from Archendale with an apprentice when their wagon of silks and brocade was swept from the Justice Bridge. Witnesses say the wagon was struggling to negotiate the high winds when it approached the west bank of the river. They give an account of the driver whipping the mule at the head of the group as the waters crested the stone bridge. The beast was unable to pull its burden to safety as the surging waters washed over the road. The mule was found one mile down stream but no evidence of the merchant or goods were discovered. Unseasonably warm weather following a snowy season in the hills caused the banks to swell. Concern was raised one ride ago when a similar incident occurred just north of Archendale. City Guardsmen increased their presence as a result.
This is the first incident of this type at the bridge in 30 years. At that time an earlier wooden bridge was swept away in sever flooding. The new construction of stone and mortar was thought to be sufficient for the heavy traffic on the well-traveled merchant route. When an earlier Carnival Leaves Town on a High Note Archendale welcomed the traveling Carnival for the first time in nearly 4 years. In town for a full ride (10 days) the Carnival brought with it a sense of fun and adventure at the end of a long winter season. The citizenry was still buzzing about the latest visit from the wondrous show that boasted thirty performers, exotic animals, demonstrations of weaponry skills, and magical prestidigitation. But by far the highlight for many was a reading with Adrue Alder. For the price of a cup of meade anyone willing to tempt the fates was given a chance to draw from the Deck of Many Things. Alder did not discriminate young or old, dwarf or elf lined up for the chance of a lifetime. The balance between good fortune and evil seemed to be on the side of Archendale since most left with smiles and handclasps. One notable exception was a poor soul NOTICE:Public notice is hereby given for the disposition of the estate of Olmer Keln late of Archendale. Reading shall be at one o'clock on 7th Tarsakh the year of the Helm 1398 at the offices of Fitz, Fitz, and Cadwallader. |
