III. Literary Terms
The literary terms I notice in chapter 32 were theme and conflict, Part of the theme was crime and self-improvement. Throughout the chapter, the theme is explored largely, through the description of the prison and it's jails, and also the jail's prisoners. While being shown around Newgate was oddly enjoyable for Wemmick, Pip felt uncomfortable during the situation, which results in an internal conflict. As Pip leaves the prison, he feels ashamed, as he thinks he has Newgate on his clothes, and "attempts to beat off the prison dust," before meeting Estella. He was self-conscience after leaving the prison and felt "contaminated", remembering who was coming. He also mentioned his "absolute abhorrence of the contrast between the jail and her." 285. Pip regretted going to see Newgate and wished Wemmick had not met him, which obviously tells us that Pip was not content with himself after going to see the prison.
