Chapter 6 Main Ideas 1-15
- There
are two reasons as to why there is an increase in the American
electorate. One is the nations experience
of the gradual elimination of a number of restrictions on the right to
vote and the other is the significant chare of the State’s power over the
right to vote has been assumed by the Federal government.
- There
were five stages the first stage was in 1810 when property did not qualify
you as a voter. The second trend
was with the Civil war and race not keeping one from voting. The third even was letting women
vote. The fourth was when African Americans
could truly vote without the different tests and laws that prevented
them. The fifth is the age was
lowered to 18.
- two
parts
- The
State has the right to set laws for voting
- There
are five restrictions that the constitutions say that lessens State
power. They are that a person can
vote for a representative or senator in Congress, the second is that race
cannot affect the ability to vote, the third is that sex does not prevent
one from voting, the fourth is that there state cannot put a tax on
voting, and the fifth is that a rightful person can vote over the age of
18.
- two
parts
- Citizenship
and residence are two qualifications that the state requires one to meet.
- Age
also exists in the States which is set at 18 because of the Amendment.
- there
were many qualifications that one must meet to be able to vote from the
past they are literacy and the poll tax
- The
purpose of the poll tax was to discourage the African Americans from
voting.
- The
purpose of the 15ht Amendment was to not let race or color be a factor as
to why one is not allowed to vote.
- It was
inadequate for the African Americans because the states set other
qualifications that the African American would have to follow, like the
poll tax, and the literacy tests.
- The
civil rights movement searched to solve the above problem by getting rid
of the thing that was preventing the African Americans from voting.
- The US
has a nonvoter problem because there are so many people who are not voting
in the United States. This is a problem because a democracy
needs a large number of people who actually vote and help in deciding the
future of its nation.
- The "cannot"
voters are those who are the aliens who cannot vote or people with mental conditions,
are in jail or prison, or those who do not believe in voting. These people account for about 20
million people who are in this group and make up about a fifth of the
people who are nonvoters.
- People
mainly do not vote either because they are uneducated about the difference
that they make, do not know anything about politics, feel they do not make
a difference, or that whoever they would vote for their lives would be
just fine.
- There
are many sociological factors as to why people vote; they are income or
occupation, gender or age, religious or ethnic background, where they
live, or family or other group affiliations.
- Some
of the psychological factors as to why people vote are the loyalty that
they have with a party, and the candidates and his/her issues.
- It is
difficult to predict how anyone will vote based on his psychological and
sociological profile is that there are so many combinations as to who is
likely but it is all based on the psychology of the person, which is
different for everyone.
