The concept of purgatory is a popular theme that has been protrayed in many forms of media, often more abstract then not. This concept roots back to the Christian belief that purgatory is only a temporary state which must be endured only while the person is deserving of the punishment. "Augustine ( de Civ. Dei, Lib. XXI, Cap. XIII and XVI ) declares that the punishment of purgatory is temporary and will cease as least with the last judgement. This idea has been incorporated into the popular film Labyrinth. Jim Henson, director of "The Labyrinth" displays this theme of purgatory by beginning Sarah's journey through a long corridoor with no end either way. The goblin king does not intend for Sarah's purgatory to be ongoing, instead he would just rather she would give up therefore allowing him to keep Sarah's baby brother. One might interepret that Sarah is being punished with purgatory for being selfish and wishing her brother away. Purgatory is used as a place to reflect, a place where your prevoius actions can be judged, and a place where your fate is determined. Throughtout her journey in the labyrinth Sarah realizes the love she has for Toby. Her priorities are re-evaluated and it is this that allows her to gain a new perspective on her life. This reinstates her power, changing the fate that was laid out for her by the Goblin King. |
