Sarah Rashti Ms. Gokturk Personal Project It was a Monday morning, I think, I’m not quite sure. I was around 10 or 11 years old when it happened. The bell had just rung for recess and everyone was running out to the playground. Now most of my friends weren’t in the same class so we would all meet at this certain part of the jungle gym. Everyday was the same thing, only today was different. There was this girl in my class named Sandra. She was the nicest person; although she was just a little over weight but that stuff doesn’t matter to me. So I invited her to come and play with us. “Hey guys,” I said as I approached our “side” of the jungle gym. “Who is that?” said my best friend Alice in a sort of snotty way. She was and still is one of my really good friends, but back then, she was my best friend. She was the type of girl that everyone loves. She was this short, adorable blond. Everyone loved her. She was always the center of everything! “Oh, this is Sandra. I invited her to play with us today.” I said without knowing what was coming up next. “She can’t play with us!” “Why not?” “Because she is fat and ugly and I don’t like her.” “How can you say something like that when you don’t even know her?” I forgot to bring up the part about how Alice was sort of the “leader” of the pack, I guess you can say. “I can say whatever I want and I’m saying that she can’t play with us,” Alice said, with her nose in the air while twisting her hair around her little finger. God did I just want to break that off. But I didn’t I simply said,” Fine! Then if Sandra can’t play with us then I’m not going to play either.” I walked away with Sandra by my side. That was a breakthrough for me. I mean I was always scared to stand up to her and I finally did. You should have seen her face. She was so confused, let alone shocked. I was certain she was about to roll over and cry.
