JACK THE IMPOSIBLE Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be stranded on an island with out any authority, food or any shelters? In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, that is exactly how it is. On this island a group of boys of all different ages and from all different schools are stranded. Jack who is one of the older boys is a self-centered child who is ugly with out silliness ( ). Jack should not be the leader because of his selfish ways and his foolishness, his overwhelming drive for power interferes with what is good for the group, and his obsession with killing could be dangerous in many ways. Jack a self-absorbed tall freckled red head is one of the many boys stranded on this island. In the beginning of the novel Jack showed up with a choir of boys dressed in all black cloaks. Only Jacks was different in a way that showed he had more power then any other one of those boys. Ever since Jack and his choir united with the rest of the boys he was trouble. He always wanted things to go his way, and if they didnt, he would get upset. Jack does not care about anyones opinion nor let alone their feelings. There-for, when the littlun spoke of a beastie figure they have seen in the night Jack had this way of just blowing them off telling them they were cry babies and they were probably having night mares. Towards the end of the book in chapter 11 when piggy dies Jack doesnt really show feelings towards this matter he just pushes it a side and keeps on yelling at the tribe. When he starts to realize that Ralph who was voted chief started to become bigger and higher in class I guess you would say, jack quickly thought of away to bring Ralph down. Jack has this thirst for power that is beyond belief. When the group voted Ralph as the chief of there soon to be tribe jack was not pleased. He didnt really understand why he wasnt wanted as the leader? Because of Ralphs kindness and natural born leader ( ) type qualitie he named Jack and his choir the tribes hunters. Although Jack is happy that he has this big part in the tribe that is being formed its still not enough. He is always wanting things to go his way, and he very rarely listens to what Ralph has to say nor does he ever obey the rules that have been made. One of the rules that were made was that who ever holds the conch may talk other wise you were not authorized to speak. This was said so that everyone would have a chance to speak; with out being interrupted, and that everything would be organized. Everyone agreed with the rule but not Jack he felt as though it gave Ralph more power and brought down his. There-for he always talked out of line and never waited to hold the conch. In chapter 8 Jack does not succeed in voting Ralph out of being chief, so instead he formed his own tribe far in the jungle taking many bigguns with him, leaving Ralph alone with piggy, and samneric. Jack as this strange obsession with killing. At first it started off because they were hungry and they needed meat. Though as the days went on Jack became more and more obsessed with killing. It was almost as though he was having an adrenalin rush. Even as Jack and his hunters played they would play games that consisted of one boy acting out as a pig as the rest of the boys poked at him with their spears. At one point in the novel Jack suggests that they all dress the littleuns up as pigs and sacrifice them as a game. Towards the end of the book, around chapter 10 and 11 when jack starts his own tribe, he has all the boys paint their faces with green and black as worriers. During these chapters he talks about how after each kill they will save the head and leave it as a gift for the beast. At one point in these chapters Jack and his tribe are feasting on a sow they killed that day, cheering and acting out their little game. While all this was going on Simon one of Jacks boys came rushing down to their camp site to warn them not to hurt the beat, for he is not a beast but a figure of a man under a parachute, but the boys are to involved with there chanting that they got carried away and Simon was killed with in the mosh of boys jumping and stabbing him with there spears. Jack this tall skinny freckle red head who is ugly with out silliness, is not a well-put boy. thereto be the leader of this tribe or any tribe. He is a dangerous, self-centered, violent boy who is to obsessed over power and the position that he stands in life. 1
