| *1460~ Vasco Da Gama was born *1484~ He became a salior *1484-1492~ At school in Evora, he studied Astronomy and Navigation *1492~Da Gama became a naval officer & commanded ships along the coast of Portugal *1497~ Gama left Portugal with a sea expedition to India, rounded the Cape of good hope. *1498~ Gama reached the Swahili coast of East Africa on his way to India. *1499~ Vasco returned to Portugal with spices from India *1500~ Vasco Da Gama & Cateriana De Ataide got married *1502~ Gama led another expedition to India with fourteen ships. Da Gama destroyed the Arab trading centre in India and along Africa's East Coast and set up Portuguese trading centres making Portugal one of the most important trading powers. *1504~ One of Da Gama's sons was killed in a battle *1515~ The Portuguese route to India around Africa was firmly established by this time *1524~ King John III named Da Gama king to India. Died the same year. *1539~ Da Gama's remains were reburied in a chapel in Vidigeira, Portugal |
