PHILLIP DEAN RADCLIFFE
Home: Bloomington-Normal,Illinois, USA.
Date of Birth: December 3.
I grew up in Illinois, which is considered part of the heartland of the United States. I first came to Japan at the age of 17 as an exchange student. I lived in Asahikawa for one year and went to Kita High School. I also spent one year in Nagoya at Nanzan University on an exchange program when I was a student at Illinois State University.
At ISU I majored in Journalism (print media) with minor studies in Public Relations and Photography. I later left ISU and graduated from Regents College, a part of the University of the State of New York.
In 1996 I received an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the School for International Training (SIT) in Brattleboro, Vermont. I have been teaching in Sapporo since 1984, and at Sapporo University as a full-time lecturer since April, 1997. My office is open when I'm not in class, so feel free to stop in and chat. It's a little messy at times, but it has a great view.
My hobbies are reading, sports, photography, movies and karaoke. I am also involved the the Hokkaido chapter of the Japan Association of Language Teaching (JALT) and TESOL. Last October I bagan to play the Blues Harmonica (Diatonic). In 2003 I bought a cheap acoustic guitar and most recently I bought a used Banjo and Mandolin. Why? Why not?
A MESSAGE TO FRESHMEN

Hello and welcome to Sapporo University! I hope that you will enjoy your coming four years here. As English Language majors, I also hope that you will take every opportunity to use English in and outside the class-room so that you can improve your skills in communicating in English.
There are many kinds of clubs here at the university and you should consider joining one that makes use of the English you have learned, such as the ESS Club or Youth Forum News, so that your English abilities improve and you continue to learn and grow.
During the next four years you will face many challenges in and out of the classroom. Although it is tempting to have a good time with your new-found friends, you must always maintain a balance between your social life and your school work.
There will be many things changing at universities throughout Japan in the near future, and students as well as teachers must be willing to adapt to whatever changes are in store. Let's work together to make your time here enjoyable and rewarding.
