I always knew running. The place I was at now was so different but I liked it. The people talked nice to me and pet me and gave me good food and toys. I was confused, but I knew I liked it. Then a lady came. She was warm and kept hugging and kissing me. I didn't know what to do with this but I liked it too.

The first time I saw Sapphire I was struck by how little and thin she was. I had been visiting the ranch Retired Racers runs for rescuing greyhounds for over 2 months now. Retired Racers had been great working to find the right dog for me. I felt confident working with them knowing that when I did finally get a dog, we would work out together because Linda and Larry Brown were so careful to match dogs and people up. I was starting to feel like it would never happen but I had a tall order to fill. I have a cat so the dog had to be cat-safe and my family all have dogs so I wanted one that would be able to join in on all the family/dog activities. Retired Racers has an open house every Sunday and I was going up every couple of weeks or so. Each time I went I was more in love with the breed. Incredibly good natured, sweet and lovey beyond belief. I have been around a lot of dogs. I worked for a vet for 4 years doing shot clinics which is where I had seen the greyhounds in the first place. I was always struck by their gentleness and quick attachment to their new human families. |
This was Halloween and I almost didn't come to the ranch that weekend because I had been up the weekend before. But Linda contacted me and let me know some cat-safe dogs had come in. As usual, each dog was more beautiful, sweet, and funny than the next. I knew I wasn't going to be able to choose, one of them was going to have to choose me. Sapphire is such a sweetheart, she probably would have been that sweet to anyone, but I thought we would make a pretty good team. I kept telling her she was a Halloweenie dog (she is black) and she kept looking at me like I was a goddess.
Sapphire had to be spayed and Linda was going to do a definitive cat testing for herself. So I left without Sapphire that day but I whispered in her ear, that if she didn't chase the cat, she could come home with me.
