EverQuest Basics

(Or, things your mama didn't tell you)

There are some basic skills that everyone (regardless of race and class) needs to work on:

Sense Heading

Swimming

Offense

One-hand Slash or Blunt

Defense

Dodge

Forage (Iksar of all classes, Wood Elves of all classes, Druids, and Rangers)

Track (Druids, Bards, and Rangers)

Sense Heading is invaluable even if you also run by LOC or Location.  Push it every time it pops, whether running, fighting, medding, making arrows, or sitting on your fanny for other reasons.

Swimming is pretty necessary; it is no fun to drown.  When it's safe to travel that way, swim along shorelines to increase the skill.

Melee skills are extremely important for even non-Melee classes for a variety of reasons.  First of all you may be TOTALLY out of mana (OOM) and for some reason (say, you're rooted) you can't run.  Offense, Dodge, and Defense come as you fight; but your weapon skill has to be worked.  There is an added reason for having good melee skills; if your Defense is high, and if you can Dodge well, you will be able to "regain your concentration and continue casting" if you are interrupted, and you may be able to avoid having your casting interrupted in the first place.

Forage keeps you fed; all Wood Elves and Iksar can Forage; all Bards, Druids, and Rangers can Forage at Level Five.  Stand up and push it every time it pops.

Tracking is invaluable for finding group members and prey, and it can tell you how close you are to something you want to avoid.  All Rangers, Bards, and Druids can Track either by race or by class.  As with Sense Heading, push it every time it pops, unless you are actually fighting.

Terms Used on Povar Server

Add                   (usually followed by some expression of "oh drat") means that another monster

has joined the fun

Adds                  The "additional" ability boosts that an item or equipment gives you

AFK                   Away From Keyboard

Agro                  A monster's hate-level; in other words, can you walk by it safely, or will it reach

out and bite you?

BRB                  Be Right Back

BRT                  Be Right There

Camp                 One meaning of "Camp" is a specific location where certain monsters or certain

items can be found; a person or group may stake out a "Camp" and fight

for experience or items

Camp                 One meaning of "Camp" is to leave Norrath for a while; to do this one sits and

types "/camp" or "/camp desktop"; this makes the game save your

character information and brings you out of EverQuest

Con                   To right-click (or use a keystroke) to see just how dangerous that target might be

Consent             Allowing someone you trust to pull your body from a bad location to a safer one

for looting or rezing; type "/consent <Name>"

Corpse               Dead body; corpses can be dragged by typing "/corpse" (but it's best to make

a hotbutton for that)

DD                    Direct Damage; also known as "Nuke"

DoT                  Damage-over-Time spell

DS                    Damage-shield; this is a buff cast on a target that covers the target's skin with

something that hurts the attacker

Drop                 Also called "loot"; the stuff you can get off a monster you've killed

Dropped             In a different sense, when your ISP or your computer dumps you out of EverQuest

you have been "dropped"

Evac                  Usually said in a panicked voice as "EVAC!!!!", this means for the Wizard or Druid

to remove the group to a safer location.  As with "Port" only Wizards can

actually "Evacuate"; Druids use "Succor" spells to accomplish the same thing

FH                    Full Health

FM                    Full Mana, or "BRING IT ON!"

Gate                  A generic term used by all casters to mean that they're using magic to move ONLY

themselves from one area of Norrath to another

GTG                  Good to Go or "BRING IT ON"

Hotbutton          A clickable "button" created on the screen to do something quickly, such as cast

a spell, taunt an attacker, etc

Hotkey              A keyboard command that does something such as Attack, Hail, or even

a "Panic button"

Inc                   Incoming; the puller will tell the group that a beastie is being brought in for

fighting by saying "Inc" or some version thereof

KoS                   Kill-on-Sight; or, "If it sees you it's gonna bite you".  Some races and classes are

KoS to many townspeople; all of us are KoS to certain more "intelligent" monsters

KS                    Kill-stealing; usually this is an accident that occurs when someone inadvertantly

does so much damage to a creature that the person originally fighting it doesn't

get experience points for it.  It's usually best to apologise via Tells or Shout

for the mistake.

LD                    LinkDead, or in other words, your ISP or computer is dumping you out of EQ, but

you haven't vanished yet

Lev                   Levitate; Druids, Wizards, Rangers, Shamans, Bards, and Chanters can make themselves

and others float

LOC                  Short for "Location"; type /loc to get the numerical coordinates of your current

position.  You can use LOC to run by if you can't track someone, or if you're

unsure of your destination.  The first number is North-South, the second number

is West-East.  The higher the numer, the farther North or West you are.

LOM                 Low on Mana, a warning that the caster may not be able to do her job

Loot                  Loot is the stuff that a monster has on it; this ranges from coins to special items

or equipment

of whatever it is

Lvl                    Level a character has achieved

MoB                  "Monster or Beast" or "Mobile OBject"... in other words, an NPC or prey

ND                   "No-Drop"; in other words, it can't be traded or put down. Be VERY careful looting

ND items; make sure that no one else needs or is entitled to the item; see also "Roll"

NPC                  Non-Player Character; a creature of Norrath not controlled by someone

at a keyboard

NUI                  "New User Interface", activated by typing /nui within the game, then restarting

Nuke                 Direct Damage spell

OOM                 Out of Mana, a warning not to pull, or to be careful if already engaged, because

the caster or healer can't help

PL                     Power-Leveling; a higher level hunter will help a lower-level one to gain experience

by buffing, healing, helping beat down the monsters, and so on.  Power-Leveling

is okay for tipping someone over to the next level, or for helping someone who

is already very familiar with Norrath but the MAJOR disadvantage to PLing

is that the person will not have built up casting and melee skills to safe levels

if she has been PLed too much.

Pop                    "Pop" may mean that a particular spell is up and ready to be cast again

Pop                    "Pop" means a beast has spawned

Port                  A generic term used by Wizards and Druids; it means to move people magically

from one area to another (in point of fact, only Wizards can actually "port".

Druids use Ring, Circle, or Succor spells.)

Potion                This is something you can drink by putting it in an inventory slot and right-clicking

it.  Common potions include SoW (Blood of the Wolf), Invisibility, Invisibility vs

Undead, and Gate

Proc                  "Process"; some weapons or items have an added "process" that occurs with their use.

Velium weapons, for instance, will proc the effect Velium Shards which does up to

12 points of non-melee damage to the target

Pull                   "Pulling" is finding and bringing prey back to the group

Res/Rez             To use Resuscitate or Resurrect to restore life to a character who has been killed

Roll                   When a special item, or a No-Drop item, is part of loot, the group members may "roll

dice" to see who gets it.  To roll for an item, one types "/ran <number> <number>"

using the numbers that the group leader selects

SoW                  Spirit of Wolf; this spell increases the target's movement rate. It can be cast by

Druids, Shamans, Beastlords, and Rangers; a Shaman can also use Alchemy to make SoW potions

for classes who can't cast the spell themselves

Spawn                The "birth time" or space between one kill and the rebirth, of a beastie

Succor               SUCCOR is the Druid equivalent of Evac

Train                 Creatures chasing some poor unfortunate soul are referred to as a "train"; if their

original target dies or zones, these creatures MAY attack anyone left in the way,

even if those people didn't actually do anything to the monsters

WTB                 Want to Buy, a trading term

WTS                 Want to Sell, a trading term

WTT                 Want to Trade, a trading term

Zone                 As a noun, an area of the world of Norrath

Zone                 As a verb, it means you're crossing a zone-line or that you're telling someone to do so

HOTKEYS

Hotkeys can be created or altered by clicking "Options/Keyboard" and then by messing around with them. Be VERY careful how you change hotkeys; I can't tell you how many newbies I've watched die because they neglected to alter the auto-attack button, or because they hailed the wrong critter at the wrong time.

HOTBUTTONS
Hotbuttons are the grey-stone buttons on the lower left of your screen. If you use "Newbie Screen" then you have 10 pages of 6 Hotbuttons.  If you use "Full Screen" then you have 10 pages of 10 Hotbuttons.  To switch between pages of Hotbuttons, you type "Shift + X" where X is page 1 through 10 of your button racks.  To use a Hotbutton, you can click it with the mouse OR you can type 1 through 0 with keyboard numbers.  (NOT number-pad numbers!)

To make a Hotbutton:

In Newbie Screen, or with "Action" screen turned on in the NUI, click "Socials".

Find an empty grey-stone button, and click-hold until a blue-stone text box appears.

Name the button; for instance "BODY".

In the first line of the blue-stone box, type the action you want the button to do; for instance "/corpse" for your Body button.

Click DONE or ACCEPT at the bottom of the blue-stone box.

Click-hold your finished button to attach it to the cursor, switch to your usual screen view, and drop the new button where you want it in your Hotbutton pages.

To make a Hotbutton for Multiple Actions:

You can make one button to do several things; for instance a Warrior may want to Kick, Taunt, and Bash all in one step.

In Newbie Screen, or with "Action" screen turned on in the NUI, click "Socials".

Find an empty grey-stone button, and click-hold until a stone text box appears.

Name the button.

In the first line of the blue-stone box, type the action you want to do; in this case you will type "/doability X" where X is the first ability, "Kick".

In the second line of the blue-stone box, type the next action; in this case you will type "/doability Y" where Y is the second ability, "Taunt".

In the third line of the blue-stone box, type the next action; in this case you will type "/doability Z" where Z is the third ability, "Bash".

Click DONE at the bottom of the blue-stone box.

Click-hold your finished button till it sticks to the mouse, switch to your usual screen view, and drop the new button where you want it in your Hotbutton pages.

To make a Hotbutton for Spell-casting:

Click-hold the spell icon you want.

When it sticks to your mouse-pointer, drag it to where you want it in your Hotbutton pages.

To make a Hotbutton for Right-Click-Effect Items:

Open your Inventory.

Make sure the special item is equipped; for instance Elder Spiritist Vambraces, which cast a low-level Druid Damage-over-Time spell with a right click, must be in the "arms" slot.

Click-hold the inventory square where the item is until it sticks to your mouse cursor.

Drag the new button and drop it to where you want it on your Hotbutton pages.

To make a Click-Link to Show the Stats for an Item

Right-click the item as usual to bring up the information window.  Move the mouse pointer over the picture icon in the info window, then left-click-hold until a coloured link appears in your typing line.  Hold shift + left arrow to send the typing cursor to the beginning of the line, then type "/gu" or "/say" or whatever text command applies, and then hit Enter to send the link.

To make a Healer's Hotbutton

Find an empty "Socials" grey-stone button and click-hold it to make the text box appear.

On the first line, type "/g Complete Heal on %t" (or Chloroblast, or Divine Light, or whatever healing spell applies.)

On the second line, type "/cast <number>" where <number> is the healing spell that matches what you want to cast.

On the third line, type "/# Complete Heal on %t" where # is the channel number that your Guild's healers use to communicate.

On the fourth line type "/rs Complete Heal on %t" so that you also inform the raid of who your target is and what heal you are casting.

Click DONE or ACCEPT, and then click-hold the new button until it sticks to your cursor, and drop it where you want it in your Hotbutton pages.

COMMUNICATIONS

There are a lot of ways to communicate in EverQuest.

AUCTION – type "/auc" before you type what you want to buy or sell.

CHANNELS – these are separate communications webs, that can be used to talk to several people in different zones, Guilds, and groups.  To create a Channel, you type "/join<NAME> where <NAME> is the title of the channel you're creating.  Inform the others you want in your channel of what you've named it, and have them also type "/join<NAME>".  From then onward, you type "/#" where # is the number of the channel – usually it will be 1; people are rarely on more than one channel at a time.

EQIM – EverQuest Instant Message; this can be used from outside EverQuest; to reply within EverQuest, type ";tell <Name> of the person you want to talk to.

GROUP – type "/g" before you type what you want to say only to your group.

GUILD CHAT – type "/gu" before you type in what you want to say to your entire Guild.

OOC – Out of Character; type "/ooc" before you type what you want to say, out of roleplay, to the entire zone.

RAID – type "/rs" before you type in what you want to be heard by everyone on your Raid.

SAY – type "/say" before you type in what you want to be heard by those close to you.

SHOUT – type "/shout" before you type what you want to say to the entire zone.

TELL – type "/tell <Name> of the person you want to talk to, before you type what you want to say only to that person.

Galathner’s Guide to Selling in the Bazaar on Luclin

The 10 Step Method

I think the best way to start is to create a new character to use only in the Bazaar, as you will need the full carrying capacity of that character.

1. Give the new character some cash ( about 25 plat should be enough ).

2. Buy 5 regular 8 slot backpacks.

3. Fill one with food and water.

4. Fill the other 4 with the items you want to sell.

5. Proceed to the Bazaar.

6. Go to a vendor and buy trader bags (you can only sell the first 60 items in your inventory ).

7. Now you will need to type “ /Bazaar “ and then do a search on there for each item you are selling, and then set your price accordingly ( I usually set my price 1 plat below the lowest for-sale price that I see).

8. To set your price you will need to left click on the item in your trader window, then click on the plat box at the bottom ( same for gold, silver, and copper if needed ) type in your price, click accept, and then MAKE SURE you click on set price, otherwise you will lose the price you set and it will be selling for 0 ( zero ) plat.

9. After you have set the prices for everything you are selling click " begin trader ".

10. I also occasionally do a search on the Bazaar window to check that my prices are still the lowest. If not then I usually set mine down to 1 plat lower than the lowest again, but not if I think that price would be to low, and sometimes I will go buy that item from whoever is selling it and resell at my price.
