SOMALI BANADIR HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION
The Hague: OCTOBER 2002
To: All International Human rights Organizations
Since the breakout of the civil war in Somalia, at the end of 1990, and its out come of the
loss of the central government, the civilian population in that country, especially those
who belong to the minority tribes, were being subjected to barbaric and unacceptable viola-
tions.
Although its almost 12 years since the beginning of the civil war in Somalia, and most of
its organizers are dead or old, unfortunately, new generation of war lords are filling their
positions, benefiting from the anarchy and the strange, inhumane, and illegal economic
opportunities available today in Somalia i.e. kidnapping.
Beside the killing, looting and confiscation of the properties of those minorities, as well
as rape and abuse of their young and old ladies, new type of human rights violation is hap-
ping these days in the area where Benaadiri community are living.
Since the last week of September,2002, seven Benaadiri community members are kidnapped and
held for ransom.
The abnormality of this matter is that, the kidnappers are not just unknown criminals with
the intention of financial gains, but they are well known members and the staff of the new
and powerful warlords currently ruling in the area where the Benaadiri community (REER HAMAR)
are living We, Somali banadir human rights organization, are very worried. This is a new type
of ethnic cleansing. Already many of Benaadiri community (Reer Hamar) have left Somalia since the
the begining of the war, and those who remain are facing now this outrageous maltreatment.
The Somali Benaadiri community in Somalia is unarmed and no one protects them, Even the so
called Somali Transitional Government is powerless or unwilling to do any thing.
So, its the obligation of the international community, and particularly of the Internatio-
nal, Human rights Organizations, to condemn this horrendous activities committed by these
new warlords and their armed gangs, against the unprotected and unarmed somali benaadiri
civilians, and also to take what ever necessary steps in order to save Somalia from its
internal enemy.
