Ready to sign up? SLTC Members must communicate with Murline Monat to join in the fun. Then when the day arrives, you’ll need to bring your racquet and $5 to cover cost of balls and drinks.

 

John S. Cramer Tournament

Congratulations to Ellen Sucatre and Elaine Hackenkamp who won the 3.5 Women’s Doubles. Make sure you ask to see their trophy! Certainly worthy of mention – Percy Yang who made it to the quarterfinals in the 3.5 Men’s Singles! Also, thanks to those SLTC members who entered this tournament. Kudos to Referee - Dennis Black, and Tournament Director - Susan Jimenez for running a smooth tournament. They get better and better each year. SLTC owes them a debt of gratitude for being willing to give up two precious weekends of their life as well as all the behind-the-scenes work to even get to the first weekend. It probably wouldn’t hurt if the next time you saw them to say thanks and that you appreciate their efforts. This tournament is a mainstay of SLTC financially and in terms of public recognition.

 

End of Season Results

At the districts in Fresno were: Senior Women’s 3.0 (Capt Ann Farias) and Senior Men 3.0 (Capt Roger Troutman). See great picture in this issue! Women’s 3.5 (Capt Elaine Hackenkamp) are in playoffs. Mr. Blue Eyes and his Men’s 3.5 team are on to District’s as well. For the rest of us who played in the regular adult season, it’s wait ‘til next year

Mary’s July 16 Drop In This was just the latest in Mary’s great get-togethers. We seem to have drifted to more eating and chatting than tennis, however. It seems to work. The fruit was yummy even though some poor brat was looking for a sweet fix. Perhaps at the next one, someone could bring “brownies”. (Maybe at the next Drop In on August 20, there will be sweet dreams.)

 

Interclub at Hidden Hills on April 3 and at Pleasanton on June 26 –Participants included all the usual suspects and you know who you are! If you missed either or both events, then you missed out on good food and good tennis. Thanks to Hidden Hills and their culinary delights. Thanks to Nancy Fong, “Super Sandwich Artiste” for the good eats at Pleasanton! Interclubs are a fun way to play, spectate and munch –ah, life is good!

Tidbits

Rick Jacoby and wife are expecting Baby #2. Tom Gillen is a new dad of a baby boy (now over 6 months)

 

Yes, you did see Ruth Keech in June. She played a match on the 12 and 20 for her 4.5 team. Now that’s a team player!

 

Injured reserve – Mary Ellen Mally who we now understand is recovering nicely. So you may see her on the court in a location near you.

 

Au Revoir: To Bruno (See Photos) who’s off to Tennessee and the good life there. Also to Jon and Elena who will be back to shoveling snow in Rhode Island.

 

Mary Beasley (who used to be very much a part of the Pacific Courts scene with her mom Laurie and her dad, Paul) was named Athlete of the Week by the San Leandro Times (April 8, 2004). She is shown with her 1st place trophy at the March Oakland City Jr Challenger tennis tournament. Mary won it in the 16 and under division, although she is only 14. Way to go!

In defense of the $300 T-shirt (an editorial)

There were many voices heard in response to Claudio’s Epiphany. It achieved what the author wanted – a conversation. People play tennis for many different reasons; they play competitively for most of those same reasons. If you’re lucky enough to be on a winning team and actually make it through the playoffs and districts and sectionals and you get your t-shirt at some exotic place like Carmel, Fresno or Reno, you’ll know that it was worth it. That t-shirt represents so much more. It represents growth, success, getting to know new people, making friends, enjoying comradeship, fighting the good fight, struggling to be whatever your potential and your hard work helps you become. It means dealing with difficult situations of health and logistics and bad line calls and raucous spectators not rooting for you. It means getting along with people you never thought you could and sharing the ups, the downs, the gripes, the drama of both good and bad times. It’s true there is a monetary cost but that t-shirt helps you remember how, when, where and why. I wouldn’t sell my t-shirt for any amount of money. There are some things more important than money. I choose not to put a price tag on my achievements! --hk

P.S. to CG --Yes, maybe the core cell is weakened. Maybe it needed to be for growth in other areas. (friends for a reason, a season, a lifetime)

Friday, August 20 drop-in at Baytrees. Cathy Casha will be wearing her Chef’s Chapeau! As usual, 6pm-- men bring bev/women bring finger food. It’s $2 to cover cost of courts and balls.

Annual Club Championship Tournament

September 11-12, and 18-19, 2004

Cherry Grove Courts

 

The San Leandro Tennis Club’s Championship tournament for members only will take place at the Cherry Grove courts. All matches including the finals, and the barbeque and pot luck on Sunday, September 19 will be at Cherry Grove. If you didn’t know it, Cherry Grove is located on Leonard Drive at Williams St. in beautiful San Leandro. It’s about 8 blocks from Pacific Courts.

 

Our Tournament Director, Leonhardt Wiedenmeyer, has established the following categories:

 

Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles:

3.0                                       3.5                                                       4.0 and above

 

Mixed Doubles:

6.0                                       7.0                                                       8.0 and above

 

The entry fee is $5 per person for one event and $10 per person for two events. The fee is payable at the tournament. To sign up for the tournament, please either e-mail Leonhardt at [email protected] or call him. Deadline for sign-up is Saturday, September 4. Consideration will be given to special scheduling requests if you let Leonhardt know by September 4.

 

It should be a fun tournament. Here’s your opportunity to get those bragging rights that last a whole year. Also, winners’ names are added to the special San Leandro Tennis Club trophy that is usually on view at Woolfson’s and at the annual Holiday Party. Be sure to at least join us on Sunday, September 19 for the barbeque and to see the spectacular finals!
