| I was on one of my many solo hunts; Sina and I would often hunt apart, sometimes she slows me down, and I traveled to the land between the rivers. While walking along the east bank of the Euphrates, I saw him, my Ruku. He must have been twenty-five then. He had blonde hair and blue eyes, which is odd for a Mesopotamian. I approached him as slowly as I could; vampires tend to move faster than humans can and it often scares them. He did not hear me as I slipped out of my dress and into the water. With vampire speed I came within a foot of him. This did not especially startle him, as if he were not afraid of things he could not understand. I remember it as if it were days ago instead of nearly a millennium He smiled the left corner of his mouth forming a devilish little dimple. Why so amused, boy? My name is Uruku and why do you call me boy? You can be no more my elder than a few seasons. I am much older than you think..... Ive come to give you a gift. As his smile became more of a smirk he spoke words I will never forget, the gift of forever wrapped in death. I knew you were special. The boy was a seer. He had read my thoughts before I ever entered that water. He knew what was coming and he wanted it. As we stood in the waist-high water he craned his neck left, tightening the well-defined muscles of his shoulder and chest. How he glistened in the moonlight. The water cast a reflection in his eyes as he pulled me close. Every death before this, including my first kill, meant nothing compared to this moment. As my fangs pierced his skin I saw his life in my mind. A small golden-haired boy running through the fieldsheartbeat his mother? the blood a past love? His heartbeat hastened as I drew more blood. He tasted so sweet but that was enough. As I pulled away he looked weak yet willing. I bit my own wrist and then let him feed from me. He was strong for the amount of blood I had removed. He murmured something unrecognizable. Later he told me he had said my name, though I had not told him what it was - yet another little psychic trick. The ferocity with which he fed surprised even me. Finally I had to throw him off. He splashed back, disappearing into the black water. I could still smell the blood as it coagulated on my wrist. The stream of bubbles from his fall slowed. I had begun to get worried when he scrambled to the surface. His body would begin to die soon; he needed to get out of the river. I carried him to the shore and laid him beneath a palm. I then went to find Sina to tell her of my wonderful new creation. I found her stalking a young woman cleaning clothes near the Tigris. The girl was quite exquisite so I let Sina have her fill before we rushed off to retrieve Ruku. I told her the story of the encounter as we traveled. She was eager to meet my beautiful little seer. When we arrived Ruku was now sitting against the palm. He flashed his coy smile that now contained brilliant white fangs. To our surprise he stood up to greet us. He bent to kiss Sinas tiny pale hand. Ooh, he is an amazing creature, Sina whispered to me as she thought only I could hear. Why thank you, Sina I told you he was a seer. And what is your seer called? Its Uruku, he answered with that sly little grin. |
