| In a Nutshell: San Guillermo Story by Meling J. Bernardino Sr. Even the early historians had no official account as to how and when and who actually founded San Guillermo. The popular legend that has passed from generations to generations has it that in early 1900s, an adventurous young man named Guillermo led a small group of natives and settled in a valley close to Morong which was being ruled by a certain Moro, in whose honor the town was named. Guillermo turned out to be a good leader. He introduced farming and fishing to his followers. The early settlers found an abundance of Kalumpang trees, hence they initially named the place Kalumpang. While majority in San Guillermo depend on farming for livelihood, many others are engaged in businesses like garment industry, poultry and piggery. Many professionals are highly recognized in the field of medicine, law, engineering, education, military, and commerce, among others. Still many others are gainfully employed in neighboring towns and cities or as a contract workers abroad, particularly in Kuwait Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Libya. The first wave of the San Guillermo immigrants to America came in the early 1900s. Families by families followed in droves when the US immigration laws allowed for petitioning of relatives. The San Guillermo folks in California have their own way of maintaining the unity and sustaining the rich cultural heritage and that they proudly cherish. Every Memorial Day, they get together and celebrate the feast of their patron saint, San Isidro Labrador. Fashioned in a lavish Barrio Fiesta to the delight of the younger generations and the senior citizens alike. Since they are scattered all throughout California and other parts of the United States they found Memorial Day weekend the most opportune time to group together for the much anticipated event. Los Angeles and San Francisco, where most of the San Guillermo folks are concentrated, have been alternately hosting the affair since it was conceived 16 years ago. |

| History of San Guillermo Community USA by Pedro "Indo" Cruz The San Guillermo Community of Northern California prepares for another Fiesta celebration. The annual Pista will be the biggest gathering of San Guillermo folks in the United States. As we prepare for this important event, let us go back in time on how the group came about. The idea of holding a San Guillermo Barrio Fiesta in San Francisco was conceived in 1978. It maybe recalled that prior to that, the San Guillermo folks were satisfied with their own get together in quite a number of ways; weddings, baptismal parties, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. With the community growing so fast and the longing for each other became more intense, a group of pioneering members thought a novel way: Why not a Barrio Fiesta for the whole community. Through the untiring efforts of Alfonso Bautista, Pepito Chua and Peping Evangelista, a group formed and hatched the idea. In Los Angeles, Meling Bernardo, Pat Mata, Nick Bernardo, Pompey Crisologo, Lucio San Luis, Bert Millare and others were all active in coordinating the Southern California affairs. Started in San Francisco in 1979, the San Guillermo get-together grew into a full scale Barrio Fiesta with trimmings of their hometown tradition. A thanksgiving mass ushers in the festivities in honor of the Barrio Patron San Isidro Labrador. Free food, drinks, and homemade delicacies are in abundance with music and tarditional dances entertain everyone all day long. |
