BOY SCOUT PIONEERS OF SAN FERNANDO

J. HAMILTON MAURICE

Founded 3rd Naparima in 1917, at the St. Pauls Anglican Church. A school teacher at Naparima College, his group became South's First National Champion in 1923, in the second year of the Sir John Chancellor Flag Competition. Secretary of the South Association from 1920-1924.. In 1962 he became Speaker of the House of Representative.

CLARENCE HAMILTON GOPAUL (Jr.)

Founded 5th Naparima at the Susumachar Presbyterian Church in 1919.His leadership skills truly made him a great pioneer. He produced some of the great names in scouting - Appletons, Hubahs, Roy Joseph, Boodrams, Horace Joseph, George Sammy, and lots more. He helped build a solid foundation that still stands today.

R. J. MORRISON

Born in Aberdeenshire (England), he came to South Trinidad in 1920 and work with 3rd Naparima. He was South first District Commissioner from 1921-1927. He later moved to Port of Spain, got involved in Sea Scouting, and donated the Morrison?s Trophy for the National Sea Scout Regatta.

CLAUDE VIVIAN LEONARD APPLETON

Joined 5th Naparima on 1st October 1922, as a scout. Became a scout leader in 1927 and the next year his group won the Sir John Chancellor Flag Competition. Attended the 3rd World Jamboree and the South Wood Badge at Gilwell in 1929. He was District Commissioner from 1937-1945. He also served as Deputy Area Commissioner and retired in 1947. He was the first person from the Southern District to receive the Medal of Merit in 1933. Served during World War II with the Local Forces and 25 years with 5th Naparima.

RALPH JOSEPH KELSHALL

Joined 3rd Naparima in 11/11/1917 as a scout and was a member of the winning patrol that won the first Chancellor Flag for South. He founded 6th Naparima and 8th San Fernando Sea Scouts. He served scouting for over fifty years in different capacities District Scout Master, District Commissioner, Area Commissioner, Deputy National Commissioner and later became the first national to hold the office of National Scout Commissioner in T&T in 1969. After his resignation as NSC, he founded 1st St. Joseph Terrace Cub Pack in 1976 and they won the Pat Diaz Flag the same year. He is the only person to receive the Silver Cross for Galantry. Kelshall had the distinction of receiving the Chancellor Flag, Medal of Merit, Silver Acorn, Bar to Silver Acorn, Golden Poui and Chaconia Medal. He played a mayor role in the acquisition of the District Headquarters at Jetty, King=s Wharf.

DR. CLARENCE LEONARD EVANS HUBAH

Joined 5th Naparima in 1924. Became a Scout Master in 1932. He was the first person to receive the Silver Cross in 1932. Assisted and led his group to many victories in the Jamboree Flag Competitions. He received the Medal of Merit in 1945 and the Silver Ibis in 1976 for outstanding services to the Scout Movement. He started a Sea Scout Section in 1945, served in World War II and went to complete his medical studies. He was the Assistant District Commissioner for South for 10 years and Camp Warden for Windy Ridge, the local camping grounds in San Fernando.

RICHARD BOODRAM SNR.

Joined 5th Naparima as a scout in 1924 and later founded 3rd Trinidad Sea Scouts in 1931.Selected as Assistant Contingent Leader to the Coronation of King George VI in 1957.

He served scouting for over fifty (50) years . Represented Trinidad and Tobago at several Caribbean Jamborees and other camps in the United States and Canada.

HENRY CARLYLE KING

Started his scouting in Princes Town and later founded 4th San Fernando in 1951 at Coffee E.C. School. He was a school principal and started many groups whereever he went. He was the longest serving District Commissioner in San Fernando (18yrs), and South Area Commissioner. He resigned in 1968 but continued to serve San Fernando as a badge examiner until his death. He received Scouting?s Highest Award, the Golden Poui in 1977.

HORACE ARTHUR JOSEPH

Joined 5th Naparima in 14th August, 1940 as a scout, and gained the Kings Scout Award and proficiency badges in three years. Founded the 2nd San Fernando Cub Pack at the Govt School in 1945 and served as Group Scout Leader. He was District Scout Master and Assistant District Commissioner for 18 years and District Commissioner for seven years. Attended the First Caribbean Jamboree as well as several others, one World Jamboree and several Conferences. He received the Golden Poui in 1981.

GEORGE HAMILTON SAMMY

Joined the 5th Naparima in 1937 as a cub and led his six, to three consecutive victories in the South Trinidad Totem Pole Competitions. In 1939-1945 served as a Scout Messenger in World War II. Joined the scout section and again led his patrol to three consecutive victories in the South Trinidad Jamboree Flag. He spent thirty -seven (37) years at 5th Naps. Attended almost all Caribbean Jamborees and a World Jamboree in 1983. He took up National duties as a member of the Training Team, HQ Commissioner for Scouts, Ventures and as National Training Commissioner. To date he has completed sixty-two (62) unbroken years as a scout.

JACK KELSHALL

Joined 3rd Naparima and later became an assistant leader with 6th Naparima. He moved to Sea Scouting with 2nd Trinidad as Scout Leader. He created quite a stir in sea scouting programs that resulted in many groups being formed during his era. He organised the first Regatta in San Fernando. He attended two World Jamborees, served in the local army, the Canadian Air Force and went to England to study law.

ROY A JOSEPH

Joined 5th Naparima in 1925 and quickly made an impression on his leaders on passing his proficiency badges. He is widely known as the person with the most badges (35) of his time and the first in South to gain the Campers Badge. Roy was part of the 1929 Contingent at the 3rd World Jamboree, England. In 1930 he introduced Sea Scouting in San Fernando and went into active politics, first being Mayor of San Fernando and then a Government Minister of Education. His interest in Scouting showed at the formal opening of the 1st Naparima College Sea Scouts in 1955.

BEATRICE OLLIVIERRE

Joined 2nd San Fernando Cub Pack in 1949 and founded the 1st Cross Crossing Cub Pack in 1964. She was known as ATantie B@ and mother of cubbing in San Fernando. She served as Assistant District Commissioner for Cubs for 19 years. In 1974 she was made an Honorary Commissioner in San Fernando.

JOHN KELLY

Although he was not a uniformed person, he came into the movement in 1935, and was elected Treasurer of the San Fernando Local Association in 1940. He served as treasurer for thirty-five consecutive years. A national record for his outstanding contribution, he was given the Silver Ibis in 1977.

PATRICK BRUCE DIAZ

Started his scouting at 9th Port-of-Spain, and when transferred to Neal & Massy as South Manager, he joined the San Fernando Branch in 1953. With the advent of the San Fernando Local Association, he joined in 1948. Served as Chairman for three years and as President for four years. He donated a Totem Pole to be competed amongst Cub Packs to be known as Pat Diaz Totem Pole. Finally moved to National Association as Vice President.

BRO. JEROME KELLY

Bro. Jerome was born in West Cork in Ireland and became a Religious Brother and was transferred to Presentation College in 1954. With no formal training but with the knowledge that scouting was an integral part of learning, he formed the 1st Presentation College Sea Scout Group. In three years he built a scout house, brought several boats and became San Fernando?s District Champion. In 1958 his group became National Champion and they went on to win the National Sir John Chancellor Flag Title four consecutive times, a national record. Not yet satisfied, his boys went on to receive 26 Queen Scout Awards in one year, a Commonwealth Record. He became Principal and shortly afterwards the college won its first Gold Medal in academics. He received many awards for his role in Scouting and Education.
