1st Naparima College Sea Scouts

A Brief History

During a time when boys wanted an opportunity to explore, a man in the person of Sherman Krishnalall Ramsingh came onto the scene. Mr. Ramsingh, a primary school teacher was also the D.C. for Pointe a Pierre. He started the 1st Naparima College Scout Troop with 24 boys in 1955, some 46 years ago. The schools Principal Rev.Lute then provided Mr. Russell Mc Neilly a professor at the school who became the much loved Scout Master.

The first investiture was done by Mr. Roy Joseph then Minister of Education and a keen Scouter himself. The Senior Patrol Leader was sixteen year old Lalman Nanan.

The Group also got assistance from people like George Sammy, with the following leaders functioning over the years Allan Sammy, David Sammy, Rawle Adimolah, Selwyn Yamin Ali, and had some prominent members such as Winston Dookeran and Brinsley Samaroo. Mr. Raffick Mohammed assisted with the acquisition of the first Scout Den.

In 1976 under the principal ship of Dr. Allan Mc Kenzie; Faizal Hydal and Lindsay Sahai as Staff representative and Leader respectively, injected vigor that saw the Group attend the Canadian Jamboree and a World Jamboree in 1983 also in Canada. In 1979, 14 Scouts received a citation for participating in the World Conservation Project. This era also saw the introduction of the Scout Band.

The Group is now ably led by Joel H. Beharry who is himself a winner of National Leader of the Year Award. The Group continues to prosper and has a vibrant sea programme having recently acquired a few kayaks. Joel is assisted by Assistant Scout Leader Michael Maharaj.
