Missing It All

Dedicated to my firstborn Son: Dominic

Gazing down on peace personified
Amazed at such complete surrender
To the exquisite perfection that is his sleep
Burning sun - he's shielded from it by my shadow
As I lean in to brush a kiss across his brow
The brash squeak of a trumpet interrupts me
Flying beads and outstretched hands
Wild screams from adoring fans of the popular dj
Harsh scoldings as a mother pulls her child from the horse's hooves
Patriotic music sails from the passing wagon into our ears
Again I look at him in wonder - oblivious he is to all this
My baby's sleeping through his first parade.
