My GGG Grandparents
Joel Ramsey
Born 1781 Died about 1866
&
Susannah "Campbell" Ramsey

Born Early 1780's
Our family originates with James Ramsey, Sr. and James Campbell, Sr., both would have been born about 1750.

James Ramsey, Sr. and his unknown wife had four sons, and possibly two daughters.

James Campbell, Sr. and his wife Mary "Smith" Campbell had five children, two boys and three girls. They all show up in the 1783 Amherst County, Va. head of household census.
Mary  "Smith" Campbell , a daughter of Abraham Smith and Elizabeth "Birtchfield" Smith, has and extensive heritage that extends back to Bavaria, Germany, that is available to those of interest.

The point of origin of the Ramsey and Campbell families is still unknown at this time.  The Nelson County, Va. 1817 tax records reveals that both James Ramsey and James Campbell owned land, and lived within a mile of each other,  it would have been logical for the Ramsey boys and the  Campbell girls to "get together"

James Ramsey, Sr. and his unknown wife's children were:

1. Son: James, Jr. Ramsey born about 1773, had a wife and family in 1810, but little is known about this family. He does not show up in any Virginia census after 1810.

2. Son: John Ramsey was born about 1775 and married Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of George and Margaret Campbell in 1795. No efforts have been exerted to research this family at this point.

3.Son:  William James Ramsey was born about 1778, and married Catherine Campbell, daughter of James Campbell, Sr. and Mary "Smith" Campbell in Amherest County, Va. in January 1805.  William and Catherine Ramsey had and raised nine children in Nelson County, Va. where they lived out their lives.

4. Son: Joel Ramsey was born about 1781, and married Susannah Campbell, daughter of James Campbell, Sr. and Mary "Smith" Campbell in Amherest County, Va. in May of 1805.

James Campbell, Sr. and Mary "Smith" Campbell had five children as follows:

1. Son: James Campbell, Jr. was born 1775, married Judith Fitzgerald of Nelson County, Va. on December 31, 1823 James, Jr. died in 1855. Judith was the daughter of Barlett Hawkins Fitzgerald and Maskey "Coleman" Fitzgerald. Bartlett was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. There were no children from this marriage.

2. Son: William Campbell was born in 1787, married Elizabeth Cash of Rockbridge County, Va. in 1818

3. Daughter: Elizabeth born 1776 and never married.

4. Daughter: Catherine Campbell born 1778,  married  William Ramsey in 1805

5. Daughter: Susannah Campbell born 1881, married Joel Ramsey in Amherest County, Va 1805

Joel and Susannah Campbell had five children:

1. Son William Ramsey born Apr 7, 1811 in Va., married Nancy Anne Fry Aug. 31, 1841, he died Jul. 23, 1890 and is buried at Dime Box, Lee County, Tx.

2. Daughter: Mary Ramsey born around 1822 in Morgan County, Ala., married Henry M. Turner Jan. 12, 1841

3. Son: Christopher Ramsey, married Mary Anne Freshour Mar. 21, 1849 in Ala.

4. Son: John T. Ramsey, married Mary Sorter Mar. 13, 1858 in Ala.

5. Son: Benjamin Franklin Ramsey, married Sarah A. Higgins Jan. 26, 1860 in Ala.

6. Son: Andrew Jackson Ramsey, married Delilah Gibson Jan. 15, 1848 in Ala.

Sometime after 1811, Joel, Susannah, with their young son William Ramsey joined Susannah's parents, and brothers James, Jr., and William, one sister Elizabeth and migrated to Madison County, Ala. we believe to join Susannah's uncle John Smith, Jr. Later William and Nancy Anne "Fry" migrated to Lee County, Tx where they are buried.
