Sandy's soccer-watching experience:
1) On TV
International Tournaments:
There are not many TV programmes which can attract the attention of all my family members (luckily, we seldom dispute over the channels, thanks to the creation of video recorders and the dullness of TV programmes) and World Cup is one of those which would lure us to the sofa in front of the TV. All the people in Hong Kong are so obsessed with the World Cup - thanks to the mass media - that you'll feel isolated among your friends and colleagues if you haven't watched the match the night before. The time difference between Hong Kong and the host countries means we had to stay up overnight in the last few World Cups (Well, maybe the fact that the World Cup 2002 will be held in Japan and South Korea is beneficial to us in this respect?).
World Cup 98
It's till fresh in my memory and the following matches are the most unforgettable for me:
a) England vs. Argentina (group stage, World Cup 98 - on 30th June, 98)
This is one of the few matches which I watched overnight (it kicked off at around 2:30 a.m.), and which was very exciting. Each team scored a goal in turn. A penalty goal by Argentine, then by England; a brilliant goal from Michael Owen, followed by a direct free kick by Argentine. My heart beat very fast when I watched the game. The result was - I guess those England supporters would never forget it - 2-2 and England couldn't go further by losing in the penalty shoot-out... And I couldn't sleep (of course, as I had to go to work the next morning)...
b) Brazil vs. France (the final, on 12th July, 98)
c) Holland vs. Argentina (the semi-final)
World Cup 94
Few memories. At the time I didn't pay much attention to any football match.
World Cup 90
At that time I always watched those games with my dad and my elder brother and this was my excuse for having done badly in my Maths exam. Germany, Italy, Argentina and Brazil were the teams I could remember at the time. And Maradona...
