Sandy's life as a small potato in Hong Kong (Oct, 2002)
I got to see an excellent concert performed by my youth idol, a local singer who disappeared from the showbiz here seven years ago and who returned to Hong Kong half a year ago (almost the same time as I went back to Hong Kong). That's the guy who molded me and had a great influence on me who chose to study the same subject at the same college of the same university as he did. Watching his concert, buying his photos at shops, waiting for him with those little girls outside of the hotel where he was one of the performers of a TV show made me feel like I was a teenage girl (though I am not)!
Just click on any of the following underlined dates and you can get to know what's going on with me that day.

| Oct 3, 2002 (Thur) | Driving cars |
A friend of mine had her driving exam but unfortunately failed parts of the exam and had to retake them later. Some people said it was easier to get a driving licence abroad and so I should try to get one when I was studying for my MA. But I didn't do so as I was too scared to drive. As the public transport in HK is so convenient, I'd rather be a passenger enjoying my journey without a need to worry about where to park my car and whether there's any traffic congestion.
| Oct 5, 2002 (Sat) | A new hiking trail |
|
We tried a new hiking trail this afternoon. We had no map at hand and only read the guide erected on the trail and asked a family who were walking in the same direction. We asked a guy who looked like a Japanese but he seemed to have no idea where he and we were. Along the trail there were very few people besides that family of three who walked in front of us. We didn't feel frightened but just wondered what we could do if anything happened as there were no people around. We walked past some places where we heard a dog barking... finally we made it to a bus stop and took the bus back to the city centre.
Later we were told that the trail we walked was very dangerous indeed...
| Oct 10, 2002 (Thur) | Concert |
The most important day came!! I saw Chris' concert with my friend, who was not his fan though. I felt a bit nervous indeed. It was the first time I saw a concert in the Hong Kong Coliseum. All the memories I had about him during my secondary schooldays came back as he sang his songs. I'd give the concert full marks as his performance was really so great (not just because he's my idol).
After the concert I also met a secondary school classmate and took the bus back home with my another secondary school classmate. It was all about secondary school memories tonight.
| Oct 11, 2002 (Fri) | Concert again - I was on a high! |
I was even more excited this evening when seeing Chris' concert again, especially since the person accompanying me was also a big fan of Chris. We both were very excited and were busy throughout the concert as we tried to take photos of him and waved our lighting sticks while enjoying the show. Again the show would be given full marks but I like the concert of last night more, although I sat closer to the stage tonight.
I did a lot of things that I hadn't done before as a fan. For example, after the concert, we went to the hotel where the celebration for his concert was held. We waited for him for a while but since it was too late at night, we decided to go back home and I thought I may not have much chance to see him again in the near future as he was planning to go back to Canada.
| Oct 12, 2002 (Sat) | Craziness continued |
My craziness continued as I went to a shopping centre to buy photos of Chris in his concert, which I hadn't done when I was studying at secondary school.
| Oct 13, 2002 (Sun) | Complimentary film tickets |
I got complimentary film tickets again from a local newspaper. The film mentioned a boy wondered about where people would go after death. I also wondered where we'd go and what we'd do after death. Was there another world after our death? Or, like the Buddhism said, we might be born again into another person, if we do good deeds in our last life?!
| Oct 19, 2002 (Sat) | Waiting... |
The crazy 'small potato' spent her weekend waiting for her idol (Chris) at the Miramar Hotel with fans of other singers who were much younger than her. He was a guest singer in a charity show this evening. Fresh, excited, nervous, expectant, 'small potato' waited for a few hours until he came out and got into his company's van. Every fan was trying their best to take the pics of him and give him their presents. Though 'Small potato' could only have a glimpse of him, she still felt happy and went back home.
| Oct 26, 2002 (Sat) | Tom Tom |
I bought a cute key ring of Tom Tom. Who's Tom Tom? It was a toy which showed up in the concert of Chris, who had helped to translate its comics into Chinese.
| Oct 28, 2002 (Mon) | A farewell lunch for a colleague |
A colleague was leaving her position but she'd still work in the same university, only in a different department. We had a farewell lunch with her, though we knew we could still see each other. She was the one I used to talk before we moved to our new office. Since she was working for my supervisor and shared the same office with him, I met her whenever I went to my supervisor's office. Hope she'd have a brighter future in her new job.
| Oct 29, 2002 (Tue) | A boring working day |
My work was getting a bit boring because the project had come into a stage where I was concentrating on transcriptions. Every day I was like a machine, listening to a tape and then translating and typing what I heard into the computer. And there seemed to be no end to this. I'd say this is the most boring work to do in this world! When can I finish it?
