Sandy's life as a small potato in Hong Kong (Nov, 2002)
The small potato lost control of herself after seeing her idol at close range...
How crazy was I? I queued up like a little girl for his autograph and got a chance to talk to him for the first time; I ran onto the stage just to take a photo with him (in front of other fans) in his birthday party organized by a local radio station. I just couldn't believe it was me myself. Maybe everyone has their crazy moments in life; I'm just a 'small potato'

Keeping contact with friends isn't easy. Keeping contact with friends you knew at primary school is even harder. I'm glad that I've got five good friends I knew since primary school and we still keep contact with each other, though we don't see each other often. There's been some or few changes to every one of us since we last met two years ago. One changed her job; one went back from Australia and started her new job; some were still working in their current jobs. I'm not praising myself, but there's one thing that hasn't changed - I do think we all look as young as ever.
| 4th Nov, 02 (Mon) | A quiet week |
It's a quiet week. Maybe life's like that? - you go to work, go back home and watch TV, then go to bed and another day comes; on the weekends you go shopping or sleep as much as you want?
Here's a quote I got from a friend of mine:
'The culture doesn't encourage you to think about such things until you're about to die. We're so wrapped up with egotistical things, career, family, having enough money, meeting the mortgage, getting a new car, fixing the radiator when it breaks... we're involved in trillions of little acts just to keep going. So we don't get into the habit of standing back and looking at our lives and saying, 'Is it all? Is this all I want? Is something missing?'
| 12th Nov, 02 (Tue) | Concert again |
Chris' having his second concert on 23rd of November and the concert tickets were on sale today. I bought the cheapest ticket, however, as I was trying hard to save as much money as I could for my further study.
| 16th Nov, 02 (Sat) | Chris' autograph session |
Chris had his autograph activity in a shopping centre this afternoon. It was a golden opportunity for me to get his autograph. The queue was already quite long when I got to there. I made a new friend while queuing up. We shared our feelings about Chris and were later joined by another two of my friends.
The function started. We were quite close to the stage and we had to turn our head and tried to avoid the camera of a TV station. Then came the important moment. We queued up again with the tickets we had been given a few hours ago and I was very nervous when it was my turn to get Chris' autograph. I said something to him and he asked me a question, which I didn't respond to quickly, as if the clock had stopped and my mind was totally blank at that moment.
The only thing with which I was quite unhappy was I couldn't take a pic with him.
| 18th Nov, 02 (Mon) | Chris' birthday party |
This is gonna be the most unforgettable day in my life and I did something that I couldn't have imagined I'd do.
A local radio station organised a birthday party for Chris and I was able to attend it with my friend. We were in a small studio with around 200 other people. When the party started, each one of us was holding a small cake with a lit candle to welcome Chris. The hosts asked him some questions, the games were played, he sang some songs... then I don't remember if it's him or the hosts that asked if any of his fellow university classmates was present. Not knowing where my courage came from, I had my hand up and then was asked to go onto the stage. Basically I said nothing and it was Chris who did the talking. Then, after having a few photos taken with Chris by my friend, I went off the stage happily, not sure what I had just done...
| 22nd Nov, 02 (Fri) | Rehearsal |
Chris had a rehearsal for his concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum. I waited with his other fans outside until he was going to go into a van. He came towards us and stayed for a while before leaving.
| 23rd Nov, 02 (Sat) | Chris' concert |
Quite happy today. First had a nice meeting with my elder brothers and my elder brother's fiancee; usually we met when we had family gatherings with our parents present but this time it was a gathering for siblings only; then I went to meet my friend and Chris' other fans to see Chris' second concert. Again, 'perfect' was the only comment I'd give on his performance. We then took a taxi to go to the hotel where the after-concert celebration party was held (like we did last month). Perhaps that's the fate. I went into the hotel, hoping that I could see him at a close range but it turned out that it was my friend who could see and talk to him face-to-face while I was trying to avoid the chase by the hotel staff by going into the toilet!
Finally at 3a.m. I had a glimpse of Chris when he was escorted into a van...
| 25th - 27th Nov, 02 (Mon - Wed) | The after-math of hiking |
Oh help!! I needed help with my sore legs, one of the aftermath of my hiking trip. I was too tired, exhausted to do anything, including watching my favourite football games in the middle of the night.
| 30th Nov, 02 (Sat) | X'mas cards and presents |
In Hong Kong we are not used to giving presents to family and friends at X'mas. But I did my pre-X'mas shopping and bought some X'mas presents for those of my friends who live in the UK. It was enjoyable as you thought about what to buy for your friends, though sometimes it can be a headache.
