2nd Nov, 00 Trip to Liverpool

It's my only activity in the reading week, during which we were supposed to catch up on our readings and I did spend a little bit of my time doing so and tried my best (Oh, really?). We caught a coach in the early morning and in not more than an hour we arrived at Liverpool, a big city just to the west of Manchester. It still rained a lot that day. We got to find some shelthers after taking one or two photos and we strolled around in the shopping centres. There wasn't a big difference from Manchester. Maybe you could say Manchester is like a rich lady with beautiful clothes and jewelleries while Liverpool is more like an ordinary girl with plain clothes.

It was much colder as well. We went to a famous tourist spot called Albert Dock where you could find museums like Tate Collection and Beatles Story. We wouldn't think that we had been to Liverpool if we didn't visit the Beatles Story, At least we now know more about Beatles who were the most popular band in the world during 1970s when I was still not in this world. In fact you could also find lots of products related to Beatles. T-shirts, photos, posters, postcards, books, to name a few.

We were lucky to be able to take some snapshots before we went back to Manchester as it stopped raining. A girl mistook me for someone. Well, not too bad this trip was.

3rd Nov, 00 IT Career Fair

How could I as a student in Linguistics have anything to do with the IT field? Well, I just accompanied my friends who are doing an IT course and had a look at the job opportunities. Lots of big name companies like JP Morgan, Oracle, Nortel Networks and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter were there. (I hadn't heard about them before, to be honest!) I got lots of souvenirs like pens, bags and a torch, which were made beautifully, and loads of booklets about those companies. I had never thought about working as an IT professional. Maybe I should think about it (Is it too early?). Training will be provided for you, whether you are IT or non-IT graduates, as long as you're smart! It seems to be attractive to me...

4th & 5th Nov, 00 Fireworks in Manchester

Fireworks should be no stranger to those of you who live in Hong Kong. They're beautiful and frequent and the businessmen never mind spending much on them. Here we can also see fireworks because of the Bonfire Night on 5th Nov. Just a small-scaled one, and it can't be comparable with HK's.

6th - 9th Nov, 00 Graduate Recruitment

Nothing special indeed this week. But you can find many exhibitions about graduate recruitment these days. Law, Marketing, Finance, Engineering, IT, Media, bla bla bla. So, you'll be definitely extremely busy if you take action for your future career right now as you've got to prepare your CVs and cover letters for application to those big name companies in addition to your assignments and presentations.

26th Nov, 00 A visit to the BBC at Manchester

BBC stands for "British Born Chinese" or "British Broadcasting Corporation". The one that I talk about here is the latter. The reason why I visited it was a two-hour local Cantonese radio programme, which is on air every Sunday evening and hosted by a group of students from Manchester, wanted to recruit some students to participate in it. I was thinking about what to do for my future and I thought it'd be a good chance to get some experience.

I just sat in another room, watching how the students did the programme covering different kinds of topics like entertainment news and music charts. Two hours passed quickly and I went home after having a short conversation with one of the hosts.

The people there were nice, the atmosphere was relaxing and the programme was not difficult to handle. However, I was quite undecided whether to join them or not...
