Sandy's life as a small potato in Hong Kong (July, 2002)

What's a small potato good at? Of course that's the fact that he/she can find a way to get lazy without getting noticed! As summer has come, my supervisor also started his annual leave, which means I can be FREE!!! Hehe...

July 2, 2002 (Tue)

An unreasonable bill

I got a letter from a mobile phone network in the UK. It charged me for one month usage as I didn't have my connection terminated until one month after I returned to HK. I was also charged for not making the payment on time, resulting from the fact that I didn't receive their letters very late which had been forwarded from the department of my UK university. I found it unfair and so I made a long distance call to that company. Whatever I said and explained to them, they still insisted I pay the money which I didn't think I should pay. So, I had no choice but to make the payment immediately as I feared I'd be put on a blacklist. But it was too late as I later found out that they had already put my name on a so-called blacklist for credit.

Minority Report

I watched the Minority Report casting Tom Cruise. It was interesting that in the film people could predict what'd happen and stop any crime before it happened. Of course so far we can't predict our future (at least not very accurately). I was interested to know what'd happen to me, but only when it was good.

Baked potato

It was really a hot day. When I went hiking, I felt like being baked on a pot.  Really don't like the summer in HK.

I'm released!!

My supervisor started his annual leave today. It may not make much difference to me as whether he was around, I still worked on my own. But still I felt like a bird being released from the cage... ^ 0 ^

Foot Massage

This was the first time I had foot massage and I did it in Shenzhen when my friend and I went there to have a gathering with a friend of ours. At first I felt a bit frightened coz those artists on TV looked being in great pain when they had foot massage in a TV programme. They said it was a sign of a problem with your health. I didn't know if I had any health problem that I was not aware of. But as it was not expensive to have foot massage there which had a good reputation, I decided to give it a try.

I didn't feel any pain but just heat when my legs were wrapped in layers of cloth which had been soaked in hot water, and I found it comfortable when I was having foot massage. I started understanding why HK people like to have foot massage here.

It was always a nice meeting with our friend in Shenzhen and we could taste food of different regions at a cost much lower than that in HK. Really enjoyable!

An interview

My job offered me a chance to have contact with employers. Today I started my first interview with employers. At first it didn't look smooth coz I had a little difficulty locating the company.  It turned out that I wasted money on the transport because it was just a 10-minute walk from my workplace but I took a taxi to go to a wrong place! And what was worse was it was raining then. Anyway, the interview was conducted without any problem.

Commonwealth Games

Today was the start of the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester. There were very few reports on the games in HK media but I was reminded of the event through online BBC. It reminded me of the days I had in Manchester and the aquatics centre where swimming games would be held was just located next to the student hall where my best friend lived during her MSc study.
