Jan 1, 2003 (Wed) New Year's Resolutions

On the first day of a year, usually people like to make resolutions or plans for the coming whole year. 'I hope I can get a new job'; 'I want to be able to travel there'; 'I hope I can reduce my weight' etc.

My New Year's resolutions are...  I've got plenty and every year I tell myself what I hope to achieve in that year but usually end up achieving nothing or some of them. So, this year I hope I take actions instead of just saying 'I hope to do this and do that'.

Jan 4, 2003 (Sat) Friends' meeting

Had a gathering with a friend of mine who came back to Hong Kong from the US for holiday. It's really been ages since we last met, although regular email contact keep us informed of each other, as if it was just yesterday we saw each other.

Jan 5, 2003 (Sun) We're HK's future pillars!!!

My hiking friend and I described turned into HK's future 'pillars' by sitting at a self-service fast food restaurant without doing or buying anything. Just chatting and taking a rest after a long hiking trip.

Lots of music awards ceremonies were held these days. To be honest, I wouldn't have known some of the songs and singers if I hadn't watched those ceremonies. Just another TV show?

Jan 6, 2003 (Mon) A POOR start of the year

Is it a good start of the year?  While I was hoping that I could save some money for future use, I had to splash out a certain amount of money to pay for the tax, government's grant loan, and credit card repayment.  Poor, poor, poor...

Jan 12, 2003 (Sun) Visit to CUHK

It's been at least two and half a years since I last went back to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) where I had three-year university student life.  Today I went back there, partly because I wanted to recall all those memories where I had. But I missed out a chance to see Chris, who was signing his autographs in a shopping centre in the opposite of the harbour.  There were new buildings and old buildings had been refurnished. When I looked at how much nicer the student hall where I had lived for three years was, I wished I could have been born a few years later as the students nowadays were so lucky.

Jan 15, 2003 (Wed) Happy Birthday to me!! ^ o^

One year older.  Didn't want to face the fact that I had to add one year when I filled in my age on any kind of forms.  Still immature in many aspects. And looked as young as ever (!).  Glad to receive some presents from friends. And I bought myself a present as I went shopping for clothes.

Jan 18, 2003 (Sat) The first visit to the TV City

I was an audience to a show by Juno, Hins and Chris.  This was the first time I got to know Hins, a singer-cum-composer from Guang Zhou who later became my another favourite singer. I was quite excited indeed coz it was also the first time I went to the TV City, thanks to my elder brother who got me admission tickets through his job.

We were seated surrounded by fans of other singers. 'Juno!!' 'Chris!' 'Hins!' Many of them looked very young and so comparatively we looked much older. It didn't matter. What was important was we gave support to our favourite singers. (that's what a fan thinks) It was interesting to see how a TV programme was shot. It wasn't a live show and so some NG may take place. Since this show - in Mandarin - would be broadcast during the Chinese New Year period (9th of Feb), some blessings were said and also because only people in other countries like Malaysia could see the show, we didn't mind being shown on TV... At the end of the show, the three singers gave some gold coins of chocolate flavour to fans and we were happy to get one from Chris and later we even took a pic with the coins. A nice evening.

Jan 26, 2003 (Sun) Reunion family dinner

Had the reunion dinner with my family today, almost a week before the Chinese New Year and we could avoid the competition for tables with others at this busiest time of the year for the Chinese restaurants.

Jan 31, 2003 (Fri) Chinese New Year's Eve

This was my first Chinese New Year's eve in Hong Kong since I returned to HK but what I did wasn't different from what I had done before going to the UK, just sorted out my old stuff; then helped my mom to pack 'lei see' (red pocket money) as I used to do previously. How much money in a lei see packet reflects to some extent the economy of HK of that year. My mom still gave the same amount of money in each packet, although the income of my family had decreased. But mom said she might not be so generous next year. Hopefully the packet she'd give me next year would have the same amount of money as before.

After my favourite casual shoes had worn out, I had been searching around for a pair of shoes that looked like my old pair or had the same style and finally I found a pair of shoes that I liked at first sight (love at first sight!?). In fact when I went to the shoes shop, I didn't aim to buy a pair of casual shoes but a pair for formal dressing. It turned out that I bought a pair of casual shoes. That often happens in our life - when we try to find something we want, we can't find it; when we don't plan to buy something, in the end we buy it. Things do not always always come our way...
