Feb 1, 2003 (Sat) The Chinese New Year

The first day and the next two days of the Chinese New Year were spent aimlessly. As my parents and I didn't go out a lot, I didn't have many 'lei see'.  Quite disappointed.

Feb 3, 2003 (Mon) F4, F4, F4...

Anyone in HK should be able to understand what 'F4' means. It's not a short form of 'Form Four'. It's the name of a group of four boys from Taiwan, who gained widespread fame and popularity through their TV series 'The Meteor Garden', which was what I had been watching during this three-day Chinese New Year holiday.  My mind was full of images of the four boys and the leading actress and I even dreamt of them when I slept. I was poisoned!

Feb 4, 2003 (Tue) The first day of work after the CNY

The office and the streets were a bit quiet. There weren't many people around in the campus.  I got very few 'lei see' and I didn't feel like going to work; after all, the holiday was too short!

Feb 13, 2003 (Thur) Atypical Pneumonia is coming?!

My friend and I decided to cancel our trip to Shen Zhen because of the outbreak of Atypical Pneumonia in the Chinese mainland. The outbreak didn't sound serious to us since we heard little about it but for safety, we had to postpone our trip to Shen Zhen.

Feb 14, 2003 (Fri) St. Valentine's Day

This must be the busiest time of the year for florists.  Who's gonna receive flowers in our office?  One of us was sent flowers by her husband and another colleague of us received flowers from someone (anonymous?)...

Feb 18, 2003 (Tue) My future

I was going to discuss with my supervisor my contract, which would end in early May. At lunchtime, my colleagues gave me some tips on how to negotiate with my supervisor over my contract. I found it funny coz I hadn't given much thought to the negotiation skills in the discussion of my contract. I did feel worried about my contract coz I knew I wouldn't be able to work for a long time as I was going to further my study in July and I was wondering if my supervisor would be willing to continue employing me on a short-time basis. But my worries were unnecessary as my supervisor seemed to agree to an extension to my current contract.

Feb 24, 2003 (Mon) The seminar

Attended a talk by David Li, a lecturer in a local university, on English and Esperanto.  There were only me and my friend and the other two attendees should be the lecturers of the university there. Anyway, whether the room was empty or full of people wasn't our main concern; sometimes fewer people may only benefit us as we might have more chance and time to discuss with the presenter. I also grasped this opportunity to ask the presenter something related to the research of my further study.

Feb 25, 2003 (Tue) The reason why I love being an RA

Got a busy day today. I had to meet a few graduates one by one for interviews for my project in the evening. It was almost a mess. But I enjoyed the interviews as I could get to know from these people their thoughts and experience that I might not have known or had otherwise in other jobs, which was why I'd prefer being a researcher to doing teaching. Sometimes I'd wonder if I had become talkative because of my job as a research assistant or if that's my original personality.

Feb 28, 2003 (Fri) Day off

I had to start taking day-off before my current contract was to end in early May. I took one day-off instead of one week each time since I didn't think I'd have any spare money to be spent on travelling and taking a day-off and working four days a week sounds good to me.

I didn't do anything special but just strolled around in different shopping centres. What a good feeling to walk around when people were working or studying!
