Aug 4, 2003 (Mon) Back to the office

I came back to the office. I still worked for my supervisor on a part-time basis.  So in the morning I worked and in the afternoon I studied in the library. I felt good about working this way. Sounded like I was very hardworking and I did do something.

Felt special about going back to the office where I saw some familiar faces. I hadn't been here for almost a month and some colleagues were surprised to see me back or wondered where I had gone over the past month.

Aug 6, 2003 (Wed) Real Madrid in Hong Kong

Real Madrid was in Hong Kong now. Beckham was without doubt the main attention although other world class players like Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Raul and Carlos also attracted a lot of attention from the media. Some said it was the greatest opportunity to have so many world class players in the same team and their game in HK is a must-see one.  So queues were already formed a few days prior to the time when tickets were on sale.  People were crazy about the tickets and everything related to Real Madrid. I wasn't so crazy for them. The tickets were too expensive for me, who had now become a poor student and needed to save as much as she could.

Aug 8, 2003 (Fri) The historic moment

The results of the game between Real Madrid and HK team were out of the expectation of a lot of people including me. When the goals were scored by Real Madrid one by one, I thought the score difference would be very great as Real Madrid had already scored four goals in the first half. But maybe they underestimated the ability of the HK team or the HK team had such a will power, they scored two goals against a team with at least six world-class players!  I believe many people were satisfied with the results although we were defeated.

Last night they attended a charity dinner. Chris Wong was one of the two singers who were invited to sing in the dinner. As a fan of his, I was glad for him to have a chance to take a photo with players like Beckham.

Aug 14, 2003 (Thur) Widespread worm

My computer got infected with a worm which had been widespread within a day. They said computers with OS like Windows 2000 and XP were highly vulnerable and would get infected once they are connected to the Internet. At first I didn't know what had happened but when the screen kept having a box coming up saying 'The system is shuting down...' I knew something had happened and I suspected some kind of virus had attacked my computer. The next day I understood what it was all about as the news reported that a worm was spreading quickly through the Internet. As a computer idiot, I came to my colleague for help and today the problem got fixed.

Aug 16, 2003 (Sat) Discount! Discount! Discount!

Did some shopping with my friend today. Found that all the money we spent was on items at a discount. Even with the case of our lunch. If there was no discount on the item, we wouldn't be interested.  It has become a phenomenon that we used to buy something at a lower price. If an item was a new arrival and no discount was offered, probably we'd wait until later as we knew in a very short time the price of the item would be lower.

Aug 19, 2003 (Tue) Office workers' conversations

Had lunch with a CU friend. And happened to meet her colleagues in the restaurant. I found how different their topics of conversations were from those of my colleagues. Typical office workers?

Aug 22, 2003 (Fri) Thesis reading

I went to the Baptist University to read some theses in its library. I wasn't its staff or student but I was offered a week's access to the library after I had made a request for access as an overseas student via email. I was satisfied with this arrangement as I didn't need to pay or submit any document. I just needed to tell the security guard my name at the entrance.  And I didn't need much time to read a few theses. I was also satisfied with the fact that my application for access was dealt with promptly.

Aug 23, 2003 (Sat) Miss HK

When I was small, I liked to watch every kind of TV shows and I thought each of them was appealing. But as we grew up, I was no longer interested in those TV shows and found them boring. But no matter what, I still watched the beauty 'Miss HK'

Aug 24, 2003 (Sun) Freebies

Got a free hands-free headphones as a souvenir for a competition I had entered earlier, organized by a local newspaper (Yeah, I sent entries to lots of competitions over the past year, thinking I wouldn't have a loss doing so!). A radio show that I was going to see with free tickets was postponed because of the typhoon.

Aug 27, 2003 (Wed) Pressure from the study

Felt confused and worried about my study these days. Got better after talking with a friend in our office who shared me with her experience as a research student. Did some window shopping to help release my pressure from the study and found lots of shops were having big sales.

Aug 28, 2003 (Thur) No free lunch

Felt better as I got an email from my supervisor from the UK about ways to collect data. Trying to figure out what I could do before going back to Manchester.

A free home telephone was given downstairs and mom asked me to get one. There is NO FREE LUNCH. We couldn't cancel our subscription to the telephone company's telephone services or we had to pay for the telephone. A business strategy.

Aug 29, 2003 (Fri) The radio show

The postponed radio show was held this evening. Only one of my two favourite singers performed in the show because of the postponement. The venue was full of audience and most were youngsters. We were standing throughout the show and we actually couldn't see the stage and the performance of the singers clearly. We usually watched the big screen in front of us. And the sound was very loud. Felt very tired after standing for three hours...

Aug 31, 2003 (Sun) A funny film

Watched a local comedy 'Dragon Reloaded'.  I seemed not to have laughed a lot for a film for long.
