Sandy's life as a small potato in Hong Kong (Aug, 2002)

Busy with everything...busy having gatherings with friends and classmates as I came to terms with the fact that I'd be here for some time and I had already settled in... willing to see some of my friends finally, busy thinking about my near future as a big decision had to be made... busy carrying umbrella for some days this month (I hate rainy days! They are as horrible as those in Manchester)... busy with office move (for the second time since I worked here; but I like the new office in which it isn't easy for people to locate me when they enter the office - that's essential for a successful small pootato!).

Just click on any of the following underlined dates and you can get to know what's going on with me that day.

Aug 9, 2002 (Fri) I hate rainy days!!

Besides its hot weather, another thing that I don't like about the summer in HK is it sometimes rains a lot. These days I always had my clothes getting wet when I went to work. My shoes, my socks, my jeans, my bag and my t-shirt all got wet.  My little umbrella couldn't protect me! :( The rain could be so heavy that I felt like walking in a pond, which wasn't a pleasant experience at all!  But the rainy weather in Manchester was worse as Mr. Rainy would attack you together with Mr. Windy there!

Aug 11, 2002 (Sun) My Sassy Girl

I had borrowed a VCD of a Korean film 'My Sassy Girl' and I watched it at home today. It was so touching that I couldn't prevent tears flowing out of my eyes. I wish I could be so lucky to find a guy with personalities similar to those of the guy in the film...

Aug 13, 2002 (Tue) My supervisor

My supervisor had come back from his holiday. Small potato couldn't be as lazy as she wanted to be. When her supervisor wasn't around in the past few weeks, small potato enjoyed her freedom and it happened that she didn't need to stay in the office all day long as she had to go to different companies to interview some employers for her work. She enjoyed it as she could travel around in HK and interviewed people whom she would not have had a chance to meet if it wasn't for her job. It was more interesting than facing the computer in the office in a dull afternoon.

Aug 24, 2002 (Sat) A struggle

Recently I was struggling to make a decision which may affect my future. I was expected to embark on my study in September but insufficient savings for a three-year study gave me a tough decision to make - should I start my study without enough money or should I go on with my present life and work?  I didn't like the life in HK and couldn't wait to go back to the UK where I thought the lifestyle was more suitable for me; however I had to have a serious second thought about that as I'd soon run out of my savings when I quit my job now.

What should I do?...

Aug 25, 2002 (Sun) Hugh Grant

I loved watching films these days and I was lucky to get free tickets through a lucky draw by a local newspaper. This Sunday morning my friend and I watched Hugh Grant's new film 'About a boy'. It was a typical British film. I don't know what made me feel it was a British film.  It was kind of comedy and I think the most interesting shot was when Hugh Grant went onto the stage in a school to sing 'Killing me softly with his song'. We agreed that Hugh Grant, although not considered young any more, had become more attractive and the way he wore clothes made you say, 'Cool'!

Aug 30, 2002 (Fri) A busy day

This was the second time we moved office. I don't think we'd have to move again in the near future coz the new office was considered a permanent office for the department. Boxes of files, stationery, books and other things, computers, printers, cabinets and chairs were moved to the new office. It was a big office shared by both research staff and research students. In the past, we had two offices for research staff and students but from today onwards we'd have to get along with each other in this big office. I hadn't known any research students previously and I think the new office may make our relationship much closer because of the way the desks and cabinets were placed. I love this new office because I got a new desk and cabinet and more importantly my desk was put in a position which people won't see me when they enter the office. That's good as I can have enough time to wake up from any nap and get myself to look like I have been working very hard!

Aug 31, 2002 (Sat) & Sept 1, 2002 (Sun) Trip to Guang Zhou

It was the first time I had a trip to Guang Zhou and it's the furthest place I had been to in China. (Oh...)

We decided to stay there for one night because it'd be too short a time for us to travel around and it'd be too tiring for us to travel to and from a city which requires us to spend at least two hours on the transport. There seemed to have been some improvement in the transport there as it took us no more than one hour to travel by train from Shen Zhen to Guang Zhou.  We first met our friend and her younger brother in Shen Zhen train station but it took us a bit of time to find each other as we were not familiar with the station. When we arrived at Guang Zhou, another friend of us in Guang Zhou drove us to the place where we'd be staying overnight.  It wasn't considered a hotel as only some officials could be allowed to live in. But through the help of our friend, we could stay there at half the original price.

Then, our trip started by having lunch in a Chinese restaurant. The food was good. Then we went to some local tourist attractions and a book city by MTR. I found it interesting to travel by MTR there. It was similar to the MTR in HK.  The people around us spoke the same Chinese dialect as ours - Cantonese, but still I felt I was a visitor. In the evening we went back to our accommodation very early after having our dinner at another Chinese restaurant and having a walk in the nearby park afterwards. There was a live TV broadcast football game and of course I didn't miss the chance to watch it but I soon fell asleep while watching it on the bed...

The next day we got up early as we only had a morning for us to travel around. We had 'dim sum' for our breakfast in a small local restaurant. Then our Guang Zhou friend drove us to the district where he lived and showed us around. Later we went to the mountain to try tasting different wild animals for our lunch. It was the first time I tasted wild animals. To be honest, I didn't have appetite for them and they didn't look attractive to me. I had one or two bites only. But anyway, it was a chance for me to broaden my horizons.

Then we went back to Shen Zhen by train and had our dinner there before going back to HK.

It was a nice trip - we tried different kinds of food and it didn't cost us a lot of money; and I got to know more about Guang Zhouuu. Suddenly I wanted to travel more cities in China...
