| Apr 1, 2003 (Tue) | April's fool - What a big 'joke'! |
It must be the most unforgettable, eventful April's fool in my life:
1) A big local star Leslie Cheung committed suicide by jumping from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which like many other people, I couldn't believe when I first heard that. It was hard to accept.
2) Rumour had it that Hong Kong would be declared an infected area. I didn't know where the rumour was from. I was home all day long on my annual leave and in the afternoon one of our neighbours knocked on our door and asked me if my mom was home as she wanted to tell her to buy rice as HK would be declared an infected area. I didn't take what she said seriously and I didn't think there'd be shortage of food even if HK would be declared an infected area.
3) Another rumour was the Chief Executive and the Financial Secretary would step down from their posts. This was even more unlikely in such critical time. It was more like a reflection of people's dissatisfaction with the Hong Kong Government.
4) The residents of Block E at Amoy Gardens, which had many people infected with the atypical pneumonia, were moved to holiday villages.
All were negative news...
| Apr 2, 2003 (Wed) | SARS... |
Back to work but not in a mood to work. Everyone asked if they got fever, one of the obvious symptom of the SARS.
| Apr 8, 03 (Tue) | In loving memory of a big star |
The funeral of Leslie was held today. I didn't watch many of TV programmes about him and reports of his funeral. I wasn't quite sure about my feelings toward his death. I thought I still couldn't accept it, as if he had never left us, and so didn't feel very sad. But whenever I watched the TV programmes and saw his fans cry, I felt uncomfortable and found the scene heartbreaking...
Although all the negative things have happened: The outbreak of SARS, Leslie's death, War on Iraq, economic downturn, we gotta think positively!
| Apr 12, 2003 (Sat) | Purchase of a computer |
I decided to buy a computer so that I could stay at home to do my work when the situation about SARS was getting worse and worse. Although the number of SARS patients continued rising, there were more people - with face masks - on the street than before. The shops were crowded with people. Maybe people also wanted to buy something to use when they were home?
| Apr 14, 2003 (Mon) | No water supply is a disaster... at least for my mom! |
There was no water supply from the morning. Didn't know why. My mom kept moaning as she wanted to take a shower after doing exercises in the park. I thought it was a disaster for her and she'd rather have no electricity than water.
| Apr 15, 2003 (Tue) | The day of wearing a face mask |
I wore a face mask for the first time as it seemed the situation of SARS wasn't getting better. I found it hard to breathe and always tried to find a chance to put my face mask off and breathe in some fresh air. One good thing about wearing a face mask was people may find it harder to recognize you.
| Apr 18, 2003 (Fri) | Lovers' Concerto |
I got complimentary film tickets from a local newspaper (yeah, again) to watch the Korean film 'Lovers' Concerto'. It was a touching story and I couldn't imagine how the story went. But I still love 'My Sassy Girl' more than this film.
| Apr 20, 2003 (Sun) | A strange scene in the countryside |
It seemed there were many more people than usual when we went hiking in the countryside. I don't know if it had anything to do with SARS, which drove people away from the city to the countryside, where they could breathe in some fresh air without a need to wear a face mask and could do some exercise as a protective measure from SARS. We did see very few people wear face mask.
| Apr 22, 2003 (Tue) | A mess |
I wondered if I went to a wrong place when I got home because I could only see things covered with cloth. It was totally a mess. My parents wanted to refurnish the ceiling and so had to cover the furniture and other things with a cloth. Some white substances from the ceiling fell onto everywhere and I had to be careful when opening the fridge so as not to let the white substances fall into it.
| Apr 29, 2003 (Tue) | The liveliness of the youngsters |
Today I went to Mong Kok where there were lots of youngsters. I don't like crowded places but I sometimes like to go to those shopping centres which are crowded with youngsters, to get to know what's been popular among them and to feel younger when walking in those places.
