Something about our trip to Dublin
1) Weather
- Raining all the time, chilly, with a very brief sunny period
- Thus no beautiful scenery at all, a big contrast to those on the postcards
- a major factor for spoiling our trip
2) Food
- limited choice because of our tight budget
- fried food all the time, e.g. chicken wings, chips
- bread => Irish sandwiches
3) Accommodation
- Not expensive with continental breakfast included, sharing a room and a bathroom by four persons
4) Transport
- You can buy a bus pass, e.g. 3-day bus pass, which allows you to travel by bus within three days for unlimited times.
5) Nightlife
- loads of pubs to choose from in the Temple Bar but we chose to go back to the hostel and get to bad early
6) Shops
- Like their counterparts in England, shops were closed sharply at 6 p.m., except on Thursdays (until 9 p.m.)
- a lot shopping centres in the city centre, e.g. Powerscourt Townhouse Shopping Centre, and especially on O Connell Street
- Dunnes Stores, Penneys, Roches and Marks and Spencers are familiar names of department stores
7) People
- Generally speaking many of the people in Dubiln were nice
- There were not many Chinese
8) Language
- Irish as the first official language is used in the public domains, such as Irish/English leaflets and public street signs in Irish but English as the second official language is still important and used in daily life. You can find a different accent of (Irish) English (or called Hiberno-English) from the mouths of some bus drivers and the elderly. I couldn't help being sensitive to their languages as Irish & Hiberno-English are the topics I wrote about for my essays late.
My advice:
- One or two days in Dublin is enough; spend more time on other places around Ireland
- June may be the best month to travel the island
- Do remember to bring your umbrellas when travelling the island
