| Buyukada is my favourite day trip in Istanbul. Catch a ferry at the docks in Eminonu (Sirkeci) or Kadikoy. Buyukada is the last stop in a series of islands in the Marmara Sea. Takes about an hour or so to get there. Keep an eye on the ferry schedules, though, because you don't want to miss the last one out. There is one pensiyon on the island, but in the summer it will likely be full. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Houses like these abound on this island. Leo Tolstoy had a place here where apparently, his daughter committed suicide. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| When you arrive at the docks and disembark, the first thing you notice is the resounding silence. There are no cars on the island, just some horse-drawn carts for the scores of tourists. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There are some awesome vantage points on the islands. The best is an umarked foot-trail that veers off the road going up the hill. Make your way through the forest to get to the clearing where you will be able to see a clear view on an ancient Greek monastary. Also, you will be able to see the view in the picture to the left here. Best thing: no tourists! Silence! Peace! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| At the docks in Buyukada. Just follow the walkway. You'll see the clock tower. Keep walking - take the road uphill. Don't do the predictable thing and picnic where everybody else does if you really want to experience the tranquility of this place. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
