Teacher Opinions of English Time Cont.
I would be remiss if I didn't highlight a recent development on eslcafe over ET.  It seems that as 2006 draws to a close, trouble is afoot at the Taksim branch of ET. This is not the first time that there has been talk of problems at the Taksim branch.  Other teachers at other branches have stood up for their various ET's. I don't know quite what it is about Taksim, but there seems to be ongoing dilemmas there.  The new 'in-house' course book is said to be rife with errors.  Molly has taken a lot of slack over how she has addressed their concerns.  She is said to by tyrannical and rude.  I know Molly.  I lived near her and worked with her for a year. Molly has high standards - she expects a lot from her teachers.  Those hired with irrelevant degrees, or none at all, can find her to be a snob from time to time.  Remember Ken?  That said, I am shocked to hear reports of how substandard the course books are. Go to eslcafe and pull up Molly's post. The occasional typo aside, she's pretty good about keeping up with the Joneses' grammar.  I'd like to go over these infamous coursebooks, but I doubt that's going to happen.  Go here to check out the debate.
"I work at ET and have been there for about 8 months now.  Yeah the hours are crap, and that's the reason why I am probably not going to renew my contract, but that's my only complaint. If you work at ET, at least at my branch, you will work every Saturday and Sunday, 8 hours each day.  However, once your schedule gets normalized, you can get two days off a week if you want, but never the weekend.

On the weekdays, you will have to work split shifts, at least sometimes.  3 hours in the morning, 3 hours in the evening, with conversations sometimes thrown in the middle...

However, other than the hours (and a certain new manager..) the job is great.  It's easy-going and social.  ...The pay is always on time (I can vouch for this - ed) and the hourly rate is above average for Istanbul.  Plus there is a nice bonus at the end of your contract."

(With regards to an in-house ET language book)
"Plenty of feedback was has (sic) been given but each suggestion was met with an insult.  When one teacher expressed his concerns the response was 'I don't give a sh*t'.  The mutiny on behalf of the teachers was not solely because of the new syste but because of the lack of respect they were shown at the  meetings."

EDITOR'S COMMENT on the above:  There is a rather lengthy discussion going on presently (December 22 2006) regarding ET's new inhouse text books. I'd like a chance to look at the books before I pass any judgement.
"I work at ET an am perfectly happy, it's a decent organization.  Their hours are falling though and you're surely better off looking for work anywhere in Istanbul over the summer."
