These areas. Mecidiyekoy, Esentepe,  and Bagdat Cad. are located in some of the wealthiest areas of Istanbul, full of western-style shopping malls and high-end clothiers like Ralph Lauren,  restaurants like TGIFriday's (which I never went to), Mercedes-Benz - you get the idea.  Akmerkez is in this neck of the woods.
This is definately upscale Istanbul.  Below is a picture of the Akmerkez, open seven days a week, complete with seasonal x-mas decorations and all.  Personally, I was more comfortable and at home in the markets in Sirinevler, but coming here every once and a while was good too.  I once almost took a job teaching English to a group of kids at an elite school here, but I changed my mind and took a job with another school.  I felt out of place here.  The school was just down the road from Akmerkez, and all the teachers wore designer clothing. I am much more relaxed in my Khaki's teaching a group of young adults in the evenings.  I have nothign against children, or rich people, I just felt very self-conscious there.  It was like being on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.  ET's location is wonderful and the school itself is beautiful - those pictures above are from the Bagdat branch.  To be honest, this is a brand-spanking new school and I never experienced it.  It does look like one of the better ones, though!
