Guzelyurt was my first bonafide vacation in Turkey - I had been there for over three months by the time I dared venture forth for a five-day Ihlara trip. Thanks to teacher friend Catharine for coming with me - I'm not sure I'd have done solo. This was the last week in December. I rememeber the snow crunching under my feet as we approached the Hotel Karbala; the smell of freshly baking Turkish bread hung heavy in the air. We had taken the overnight bus, but were anxious to get out there and see Ihlara. It was worth every sleepless, back-breaking bus moment to get there. |
