Teacher Opinions of BERLITZ Continued
EARLIER COMMENTS
I will keep updating comments as soon as I see them - and when I get the chance! - ed.
"A friend of mine works there (Berlitz).  They have yet to hint that she will get a residency/work permit so this is all just a huge If-clause.  Pay is not so hot, either, she says.  She has no CELTA or TEFL cert but that didn't seem to be a problem for being hired."

"Does anyone else thing it's strange that they don't ask for a CV, cover letter, or references?" (referring to a recent Berlitz Job Ad)

"...I went ahead and applied anyway.  I was a little alarmed by how quickly they sent me a contract.  Their system of hours.."credits".. pay seemed a tad sketchy too..."

"Choose Berlitz...they are the lesser of all the evils.  They will probably give you a place to live in, and help you with your work and residency permits..."

"The good thing about Berltiz , is that if they like you and you do a good job, you will be treated pretty well, and you can work there for the long term.  Also, the name "Berlitz" ..still carries weight and prestige. (The poster) has friends who work for Berlitz Montreal who have been there for years.  That says a lot about a language school.. It is all a question of 'fit' and whether you can conform to their regimented lesson structure (The Berlitz Way).  If you can adapt, good, if not, you might not be happy."

"...they are a lawless organization that changes the rules, that do not really exist, when they choose, without concern for consequence.  The overtime that is worked is not really secure...When it comes to pay, Solmez does what he wants. ...They 100% fraudulentely represented themselves, which is what they do to everyone.... They owe me over 1000 ytl from the exchange that hasn't and won't ever be acknolwedged..."  (They ripped this teacher off when they found out that she wasn't going to renew her contract - redefining what constituted overtime so as not to have to pay her.  This Solmaz character sounds like a real creep... - ed.)

"Berlitz is certainly one of the more organised schools around.  The Director, Solmaz, worked for years in New York and understands the importance of having a proper logistical procedure.  He also understands the importance of having a motivating environment for his employees....Berlitz reshaped their contracts last year, making it very difficult to make any serious money, even with overtime.  I think about 1500 YTL for a hundred hours or something like that..." (there have also been many counts of encounters with this Solmaz character who has been described as difficult and has taken contract-jumping teachers to court...or tried to...-ed)

"The only thing positive about Berlitz are the teachers and the students.  They pay on time but you have to go to them and hope  they are there to get your pay.  They used to deposit the pay in your bank account  but they stopped that for some strange reason.  Yes they are the best of this type of system, but they have management problems and the very difficult Solmez  wants to control everything and he is stubborn and he thinks that  because he used to work in New York that qualifies him for everything...."

"Berlitz must have changed their policy.  Last year they were offering a new contract of 1250 YTL per month for 57 hours... And an overtime rate of 14.5 Lira.  So in slow months your guaranteed salary was nothing special... I flatly refused that offer from last year.  However it;s possible that their HR Manager Mesut may have realized that quality teachers won't work for that kind of crap money."

"Best of the bad lot, pay is on time all the time, flats are ok and most of your students are company workers, so no students (ie kids) to put up with, class size is quite small with no more than 6-7 per class.  Overall I'd say it is one of the better chop shops in town." (there have been more than a few counts of late pay or having to chase down your pay for Berlitz - ed)
