BAKIRKOY |

Bakirkoy was basically my home for a couple of years. I lived and worked right there or near there. It is crowded and chaotic at times. Right on the sea, if you follow that walkway you'll get there, it is an upscale neighbourhood with Western-style shopping malls and fast-food chains. But is still has its own distinctive charm - which I love. There are awesome lahmacun places. The train stop is basically to the right of where I was standing to take this picture. There are also a number of language schools here, including English Time, ILM, Dilko, Interlang, Discovery and Deulcom (to name a few). |

The picture above is in late April, to the left it is likely December. Below is in the summer, obviously. at the square where the dolmuses and busses stop. This is where you'd get off to either catch a train, or walk around Bakirkoy. It's also close to the Carosel Mall. FYI, it is also a site where a bomber let loose on a taxi. No injuries but for the bomber, and the cab. |

The police station is to the right of where I was standing in the top picture, opposite the post office. I once had a phone interview with a German school right here, and the interviewer not only knew Istanbul, but knew exactly where I was standing in Bakirkoy. You find dozens of ex-pats here because of the large number of language schools where they are likely working. |

| Inside the Carosel Mall in Bakirkoy, which you'd run into just by walking down the pedestrian walkway until you hit a McDonald's. When you look right, you'll see it. Apparently, Starbucks has invaded it. No big deal - I'm just surprised there is a market for it! To the right the multi-levels of the Carosel, and, incidentally, one of the few places that will change foreign money after the doviz's have closed, and on Sundays. |

| At the seaside in Bakirkoy - great place to hang out pretty much anytime. Be careful of the curse-giving gypsies, tho. |

To the left, two language schools in Bakirkoy. I taught in Deulcom for about a year. I looked inside Discover - it was nice. It's a great location, not far from the sea. But I have never heard a single word about it on Dave's ESL cafe. Below, a pool I paid a day pass for on a hot summer day. Well worth it. Free towel. |
