| "Will an Individual with Moebius have a child who is also affected with Moebius?" |
| May 7, 2000) Difficult questions, often without answers, seem to abound for those with Moebius. The following is taken from emails sent by both parents and adults with Moebius syndrome. Most likely, many of us have asked the same (or very similar) questions. Are there any answers? "I am 24 and am now encountering many friends having kids. I am pretty sure I am set on adopting mine, just out of fear I would pass my Moebius on to any future kids. Are others as concerned as I am? I know genetic counseling is available, but how accurate is that? My parents 20+ years ago had genetic counseling but nothing showed up, granted this was 20+ years ago. I guess what I am really curious about is do others share the same fears or concerns I do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A parent of four children, two of whom are affected with Moebius writes... I am the lucky mother of 4 beautiful children, 2 of whom live with Moebius Syndrome. Our questions have evolved through the years since my (first child with Moebius was born) and went undiagnosed for years. That was in 1979. Her sister entered our lives on new year's eve 1983. There is a special bond between them that transcends the common face they manifest--many people confuse the two of them even though they are 5 years apart in age. Their older siblings are 23 and 28 years old and our thoughts now turn to love and marriage and family . . .and genetic history. Could you help put us in touch with the latest thinking on Moebius patterns in families?? |
