| Rita Elaine Gatewood Smith was born in Dallas, TX on August 26, 1961. She was the youngest of four children. Rita had fought health problems off and on since she was a child. She grew up, married and had one daughter who was her life. Shortly before Rita passed she learned that she was to be a grandmother. She tried valiantly to hold on... but it was not to be. My sister, Rita Smith, passed away after a tremendous 2 1/2 year battle with melanoma on May 17, 2003. She slipped away quietly and without the pain that she had lived with for so long - surrounded by her brothers and sister as we quietly told her how much we loved her and that she should go and wait for us.
