    My Bio

My name is Walter Brown and I would like to take a bit of time to tell you about myself. I am 33 years old and I am currently five classes away from my B.S.I.T degree from theUniversity of Phoenix, where I have attended classes off and on for a little over four years now.

I always wanted to get into I.T. but when I first had an interest in the field at around the age of 23 or so, I was told that "only wiz kids do that stuff" by a Pharmacist that I worked with. I didn't really pay much attention to this statement at the time, but in retrospect I guess a part of me believed him, and maybe a part of me still believes that to this day.

The fact is, I worked with this guy, and he didn't know me so how was he able to judge me and say that I couldn't perform the duties of an I.T. professional? In reality, he did not have a place to judge me and although I know that I never had an interest in school at that age, some encouragement may have went a long way! Nevertheless, I was not ready for college at that age, so regardless of what he had to say, my destiny would have to wait until I was about 28 years old.

    Growing Up

I was born in Fresno, California and lived there until the age of two. At that point my mom and my dad moved to a small town in Northern California, called Clearlake Oaks. It is a place that I can hardly stand to drive through now on my way to the northern California coast, but at the time of my youth, it was great.

I was a normal kid, and I did things that kids don't seem to take much joy in doing these days. I played baseball, rode my bike endlessly, swam in the lake and since we lived on the water, I fished just about every day I could go outside.

Around the age of 12, my mother met my stepfather and we moved to Carson City, Nevada for his job. I have to say that I hated this place more than words can describe for many years. I could not believe that I came from such a small town, and things like music, clothing styles and people in general were so much different.

I found Northern Nevada to be a little bit "hick-ish" at first, but I managed to make it through high school, and after years of swearing that I would leave here and never come back, I ended up actually leaving here last year, only to return a few short months later.

I had always wanted to live in Seattle, and with my job restriction being only that I live near an airport, I could live anywhere I wanted, so I packed up and moved to Seattle. After about 4 months of complete misery in that awful place, I packed up my car and drove back to settle in Reno, where I live today and have no plans of leaving in the near future.

    Career

I currently work as an implementation consultant for an organization based out of Pennsylvania, and I am working in healthcare I.T. In my previous life I have done a few odd jobs, but for the most part I was a pharmacy technician for about 15 years, with a few breaks due to mental health reasons (Pharmacy is quite stressful sometimes).

My job requires me to sometimes travel from Reno to Los Angeles as of lately, but for the first 8 months of my employment with my company, I flew from Reno or Seattle to Queens, New York only to drive 30 miles to work in Uniondale, New York.

I flew back and forth on this route for 8 solid months, every single week with the exception of a few holidays and a few weeks of spread out vacation. In my first year of being a consultant, I flew over 150,000 miles, and that number is only going to go up. Overall, I love my job, but it is stressful, tiring and is filled with the typical office politics that I can not seem to escape no matter where I work.

On top of all of that, living in a hotel, going through airport security and dealing with people who think they are a little more important than they actually are is very hard on the body and mind. I have been sick three times in 2008, which is about 3 more times than I generally get sick in any other year in my 33 year history on this planet.

No matter how tough it gets with my job, and with school I still find a way to keep going as I know that an end is in sight, and hopefully other career opportunities as well. I am not sure what the future holds for me career wise, but if I keep working hard like I have always done, and do what I am told, I am optimistic that all will work out in the end to my advantage.
