You can reach the island by ferry from Houghton or Copper Harbor, Michigan. Another route is to take a ferry from Grand Portage, Minnesota. An alternative is to take a private seaplane.
My trip in 2002 used the Wenonah from Grand Portage, Minnesota. The trip out to the island was uneventful, but on the way back was a bit more colorful. Lake Superior was whipped up into 4 to 6 foot swells. Plan to carry some motion sickness pills and prepare for possible delays due to the weather.
