1.   COMPANY HISTORY

Sandton Appliance Services  was established in 1985,  trading as  Ferdi Fonics/Sandton Appliance Services (Pty) Ltd. It was acquired in 1990 by the present owner, Don Barecchia who registered it as Sandton Appliance Services cc.  As the demand for the specialized services it provided increased gradually over the years, it became necessary to augment the technical staff and working space compelling the company to expand in 1995 within the Hobart Rd. Shopping Centre, where presently it occupies operating space of over 300 m2, doing mainly repairs to all makes of domestic and commercial appliances. The operating staff has now increased to 16 members. Increased  work  demand  from  the  areas

east  of  Johannesburg  has   led to the   opening   of  a  branch,  in July  2004, in the Orion

Shopping Centre, Elma Park,  operating   as   Bedfordview  Appliance Services & Repairs,  with the

main aim of providing quicker services for these areas.

2.   SERVICE SKILLS

The technical operation is supervised by the close corporation’s sole member, Mr. D. Barecchia who, as a qualified Electrical Engineering (Light Current) Technologist, has had vast experience in the field of automation and control of machinery, both overseas and in S. Africa, having worked for ESKOM for 15 years in designing and servicing power station electrical controls, prior to acquiring Sandton Appliance Services cc. Presently, he is also the sole member of another company, Doncat Machine Controls cc, which deals exclusively with the design and repairs of industrial machinery controls. Both companies complement each other whenever it is necessary. His technical experience  together with the ability of providing prompt, above average hi-tech service with the help of his highly skilled and motivated staff, has led to the gradual growth of Sandton Appliance Services cc.

Regular training, particularly through BSH Home Appliances (Pty) Ltd. (BOSCH), ensures that the technicians are kept abreast of modern technology.  Their  task is enhanced considerably by the availability of  specific documentation of almost all types of appliances pertaining to service manuals, wiring and circuit diagrams, upgrades and modifications: all essential tools to prevent undue delays. They are capable of operating sophisticated test equipment such as digital analyzers, oscilloscopes and  gas-leak detectors.

4.  SERVICE PROCEDURES

Appliances can be serviced at the customer’s premises  when the fault reported is small in nature and possibly already diagnosed. Alternatively, the appliance may be brought into the workshop or collected at no additional  cost  by Sandton Appliance Services cc for evaluation and quoting. This way, in the workshop, the appliance can receive the outmost attention from the supervisor; the diagnostic process can be finalized quicker due to the availability of spares and documentation, which is not always the case for field repairs.

A large range of appliance spare parts is kept  in the company’s stores to cater for the needs of the workshop as well as for counter sales. Spares out-of-stock may be acquired from various suppliers such as Tecsa, Defy, AEG, BSH, Lategan and others, within 24 hours or directly from overseas, if necessary.

5.  MODIFICATIONS/UPGRADING

It is company policy not to scrap any appliance affected by obsolescence unless all attempts made to carry out appropriate modifications or upgrading, in a cost effective manner, have failed. The technicians are trained to carry out repairs at printed circuit board level, even to the point of designing new p.c. boards.
