Act I: Scene 2
(A bedroom of a small apartment. Night. Lizzie, 14, and Hannah, her younger sister, sleep. A vampire enters, creeps to Lizzie’s bedside. She wakes just as he prepares to strike. She screams and runs into Hannah’s bed. VAMPIRE exits.)
HANNAH Ow! Get off me.
LIZZIE A vampire!
HANNAH Get. Off. Me.
(Turns the light on.)
LIZZIE He was there. He was right there. He was standing over m-my bed and then he... AARG. And then he was like RAH.
HANNAH There’s nothing there.
LIZZIE He was so real.
HANNAH Well, he’s not there now. Can we go to sleep please?
LIZZIE Okay.
(She lies down in Hannah’s bed.)
HANNAH In your own bed.
LIZZIE Fine. (She goes back to her own bed. Hannah lies down. LIZZIE takes out some salt and sprinkles a line of it around her bed. She then sits on her bed, blankets around her, takes out an old book of Shakespeare, and reads by flashlight.) Now is the winter of our discontent. Made glorious summer by this sun ...
HANNAH What are you doing?
LIZZIE Warding off evil. All the clouds, that lour’d upon our house ...
HANNAH That doesn’t sound like the Bible.
LIZZIE It’s not. It’s Richard the Third.
HANNAH Shouldn’t you be reading the Bible? Now I lay me down to sleep.
LIZZIE We don’t have one. This is the next best thing. (reading) Our bruised arms hung up—
HANNAH I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
LIZZIE Instead of mounting barbed steeds.
(Hannah drifts off to sleep. VAMPIRE enters.)
VAMP He capers nimbly in a lady’s chamber.
LIZZIE (with eyes closed) But I ...
VAMP Strut before a wanton ambling nymph.
LIZZIE Curtailed.
VAMP Cheated.
LIZZIE Deformed.
VAMP Unfinished.
LIZZIE Into this breathing world.
VAMP Since I cannot prove a lover, I am determined to prove a villain.
LIZZIE Sleep, thoughts, down to my soul. (He prepares to attack. She opens her eyes and sees him.) Noooo! (She throws the book at him.)
VAMP Ow!
LIZZIE Go away, go away, go away, go away.
VAMP That hurt.
LIZZIE (to herself) Wake up, wake up, wake up.
VAMP Apologize.
LIZZIE No.
VAMP Say you’re sorry.
LIZZIE You were going to suck my blood.
VAMP How do you know that?
LIZZIE You’re a vampire.
VAMP Always making assumptions. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
LIZZIE I’m judging you by your teeth.
VAMP Branded because I have large canines.
LIZZIE Is that flesh in your teeth?
VAMP What? Oh, sorry.
LIZZIE You’ve had your fun, now leave.
VAMP What’s the hurry. Mom’s at work. Sister’s asleep. You’re awake ... alone. You have such a nice neck. So delicate.
LIZZIE Hannah.
HANNAH Sleeping.
LIZZIE Lights, Hannah.
HANNAH SLEEPING.
VAMP You see. She’s not interested.
LIZZIE (praying) Now I lay me down to sleep.
VAMP Praying? How cliche. Next I suppose you’re going to bring out the garlic and wooden stake.
LIZZIE I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
VAMP Interesting choice of words, don’t you think?
LIZZIE What do you mean?
VAMP Soul to keep. Do you really want someone else to keep your soul? What kind of God steals souls? I wouldn’t pray to that kind of God.
LIZZIE You steal souls.
VAMP I suck blood, not souls. Blood is a renewable resource.
LIZZIE But then your victims become creatures of the night, flying through the streets, driven by their lust for power and blood.
VAMP You’ve been watching too many old movies.
LIZZIE What do you want? (He leans in close.) Get BACK.
