Synopsis
Theme - Does love survive the test of time? In other words, if Romeo and Juliet had lived, would they have stayed together?
Plot - When the play opens, Friar Lawrence is on his way to the Montague’s house for supper. He stops to explain to the audience how the star-crossed pair escaped death in the tomb along the way. At the hovel, Juliet prepares the evening meal. Romeo returns home from wandering all day, and Juliet confronts him. After the Friar arrives, he and Romeo drink and talk about love and the way things used to be. Juliet, meanwhile, shares her heart with an urn that holds the remains of the Nurse. Romeo and Juliet fight over the urn, which causes her to go into labor. Time is too short to summon the midwife, so Friar and Romeo must deliver the baby. During the delivery, which satirizes medieval birthing practices, Romeo and Juliet forget why they had been upset with each other. The birth of their 13th child, their first boy, causes them to remember what is really important in their lives and why they are still together. |
