Here is yet another goldmine find from a little webbrowsing. Some guy on EBay with no feedback profile magically came up with "prototypes" from the 1995 Transformers Generation 2 Go-Bots line. A couple of funny things about his auctions though got me to thinking. First off all his other "prototypes" were actually first shots of things like the X-Men Movie line, the Reissue GIJoe line, and the upcoming Lord of the Rings line. The guy didn't even realize that the Lord Of the Rings prototypes were what they were, he listed them as ToyBiz Marvel Movie figures. So these items were "first shots" not "prototypes". A first shot is a pre-production run casting of the new molds so the company execs can take a look at what the molds are making and decide if any changes are needed. I also think first shots are used to pick the paint and plastic color schemes to be used for the production run.
The second fishy thing about this guys auctions is that all the items he has up for auction had been produced in the last couple of years, or are going to be produced shortly. Third funny thing is that this guy pops up on Ebay with no feedback profile established and wants us to believe he has all these "rare prototypes". I don't buy it.
What we have here is some sort of company middle man aquiring pre-production samples. It's not my place to judge his actions but never-the-less we have these cool photos to show for his "hard work". While he was claiming these were "prototypes" for Generation 2 cars, it far more likely that they are just first shots of the Robots in Disguise 2001 toy line. Check the links on the bottom of this page for all the first shot photos. You will see that the color schemes are basically unpainted versions of the RID production cars. Given that these "prototypes" are actually first shots of the new RID2001 line, it's a pretty safe bet that the two cars above are actually first shots of upcoming RID spychangers. Either BIGBADTOYSTORE.COM or ROBOZONE.COM, I forget which, was preselling 4 sets of RID spychanger 2-packs earlier this year. They however had to change the orders down to just three 2-packs when Hasbro only released three sets. It's very likely that the aforementioned website was basing their presale info on info supplied by Hasbro earlier this year. Although no confirmation has been made to the identity of the cars in the 4th 2-pack I believe we are looking at them right here: A Dodge Viper and a Camaro. These were most likely scheduled to be part of the Generation 2 Go-bots line as the auctioneer suggested. But it is even more likely that not only were they scheduled for late release in the G2 line but are in fact first shots of upcoming Hasbro RID2001 toys.
I don't know who is reading this page or if anybody reads it at all but thanks to this "leak" in the company process I believe I am the first person on the internet to give you the exclusive inside scoop on the two missing Robots in Disguise spychangers. Naturally all the info contained herein is my opinion and speculation, but I tend to be very good at forming conclusions from the facts available. Once again we will have to wait to see the outcome of my conclusions, I for one hope I am right. I would love to see these two little guys become part of the RID line.
