Interview Questions

1.         What tasks would you employ to teach integers?

An answer I would expect to hear include details about using manipulatives to demonstrate the principle of integers.  I would like to hear how the prospective math teacher links integers to a real life event.  A description of an actual lesson would be ideal!

2.         How would you handle a disruptive student?

An expected answer would include a description of a teacher’s philosophy behind dealing with all children.  I would hire a prospective teacher that began with explaining that the key to handling any student is to keep them busy.  Teach from bell to bell, no down time in the classroom at all.  Maintaining the child’s dignity is important when dealing with a problem and would need to be included in an ideal answer to my interview question.

3.         What grade level have you had the most success with and why?

This type of question assists me and being able to place a teacher where he/she would be the most successful.  If the teacher is successful then the students will benefit.  I would expect to hear that the teacher felt the grade level was the best because the students were successful.

4.         How would your colleagues describe your work habits?

Punctual, flexible, easy to get along with, intelligent, eager, hard worker, willing to give an idea a try are some of what I would like to hear in any prospective teacher.

5.         What are your long range plans for teaching?

I would like to hear a teacher state that they want to further their own learning.  This could include college level work to teaching staff development classes.  Another topic that I wouldlike a prospective teacher to state deals with giving back to the education profession through mentoring.

6.         What strategies would you use to help learning disabled students acquire the curriculum in a regular education setting?

Willing to work in collaborative teaching partnership is the type of answer I would be looking for.  Other information should include particular strategies that the applicants had success with when working with special education students.
