Jiwaji University was established as a teaching and affilating university on may 23,1963 with the jurisdiction extended to Gwalior ,Morena,Bhind,Guna,Shivpuri and Datia districts .The foundation stone of the university was laid by Late Dr.Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan,the then President of India on Dec 11,1965.At present the University has 85 affiliated Colleges besides University Teaching Departments termed as Schools of Studies.

The Campus of the Schools Of Studies came up at the famous Naolakha Parade Ground after a generous allocation of 225 acres of land by the M.P.Government.The present location of the university lies at an equal distance of about 2k.m. from main urban centers of gwalior .The university campus on its two sides is flanked by small hills which provide a picturesque landscape and enhances its beauty manifold.

The University started post graduate teaching and research in the Schools of Studies from the academic session 1966-67with the establishment of Schools of Studies in Botany and Zoology.The Schools of Studies in Physics,Chemistry and Ancient Indian History.Culture and Archaeology were started from the session 1969-70.The Schools of Studies in Economics and Mathemetics came into existence from session 1980-81.The Biochemistry teaching was started from 1986-87.Indira Gandhi Academy of Environmental Education ,Research and Ecoplanning started during the Seventh Plan period.

The University also started MBA course under the Schoolof Studies in Commerse from the session 1987-88.The School of studies in Library and Information Science was established in 1989.In 1992-93 the School of Earth-science Studies was established .The University is imparting Post Grduate Programme in Tourism and Travel Manageent from session 1992-93.The University also has a Centre for Foreign Languages since 1986 which impartes diploma and certificate courses.
