The Qur'an is the central text of Islam. It is considered by Muslims to be a book of divine guidance and direction from Allah to mankind. The Qur'an is considered to be the perfect and final revelation from Allah, and a culmination of a series of religious texts which have been revealed to mankind over the ages. The Arabic texts of the Qur'an were revealed to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), by the angel Jibrīl or Gabriel. The first of a series of revelations are said to have been revealed to Muhammad(pbuh) during the month of Ramadan and were subsequently memorized and transmitted orally to the prophet's companions who rnd scholarship of the Qur'an is considered of exceptional importance in Muslim society, as is the commitment of the entire Qur'an to memecorded it in his own lifetime over a period of 23 years. The Qur'an's traditional levels of both practical and mystical interpretation make it a necessary study tool for the edification of Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
