“Beginning and the End” –4/26/04 In the beginning, ere man was made, When all that lived had but one choice, Then ev’ry field, mountain, glade, All cried out, “Holy!” with one voice! But soon thereafter, in prideful scorn, We cast aside our robes of white. Turned backs upon the Fields of Day, To walk the empty Halls of Night. So all our false and vain glass towers, Which we build with lonely hours, The Hellmouth greedily devours, Until at last He comes again! Then let the Earth be purified, And level’d be the twisted crags! Shine forth the nigh forgotten light, And turn to riches, beggars’ rags! Then let the Spirit’s cleansing tide, Remove the signs of all disgrace, All imperfections in His Bride, And all the shame from Adam’s face! It seems that when we are gone, He would want to turn the page, Yet again to take up pen, And write Himself a nobler Age. But in our choice lies all the glory, He will not make another story. And all that He will deign to write, Is our Epilogue: At last, Respite.
