A Simple Touch (Soon Forgotten) 8/29/05 Our skin is skin and flesh is flesh as well, In ways that poetry cannot disguise. I cannot read your heart from shifting eyes, Nor bring myself to trust what lips do tell. The act now clearly right before me stands, But not more clearly than the past which binds And paralyzes as it soft reminds: My Rubicon: the distance twixt our hands. For Rome is still so very far from sight, And speculation often looks like fact. This path is both the hardest and the best, Like any other thing worth doing right. The gap twixt loss and vict’ry is the act, And I must risk: “Alea iacta est!”
