The Lonely Captain’s Prayer -3/01/04 I cannot help but be amazed that men, From Fiat Lux to now have walked this Earth; They’ve placed through all the arts of mortal ken A meas’ring tape around her pregnant girth. And so I know that many must have seen Your face, and merely missed, or just ignored. For they were ne’er aware that in between Their eyes and yours flew angels of the Lord. So I alone, a poet not a seer Can hear the glad and e’er resounding, “Hark!” I let your blue and shining signals steer, Your eyes, the stars: my guide but ne’er my mark. But how I wish there’d summon from the Brine, A Wind to fly my boat and make you mine!
