MUSICIAN BIOGRAPHIES
Vasanthi Shridar is an exceptional Carnatic Vocalist whose mesmerizing performances have earned her a special place in the hearts of music connoisseurs in the New England area and beyond.  Her unique voice culture combined with her innate ability to bring out the subtle beauty and nuances in the ragams and the true bhavams of the krithis, have earned her awards and special acclaims such as, " [her's is] a music so divine and authentic it was as if she never left the shores of Mylapore, wheras the truth is she has never set foot there . . ." Vasanthi was born and brought up in Nashua, NH and is currently learning on her own with guidance from her parents.  In addition to being a fine teacher, Vasanthi is also very interested in musicology.  Incidentally, she is also a student of Bharatanatyam, having learnt it for several years.  Vasanthi is a freshman at Harvard University, pursuing premedical studies.  Within the Harvard community, Vasanthi is working towards increasing awareness and interest in her art form through performances, music directorships, practice groups, and teaching.

Raghu Madyastha started learning Carnatic vocal music at the ripe age of 11 in Bangalore, India admittedly at his mother's insistence.  He studied vocal music continuously for the next 5 years, two of which were under All India Radio artist H.K. Narayan, and not under parental duress.  He also studied under Jayasree Varadarajan in California for a period of 6 months.  Raghu is very grateful for the opportunity to participate in "A STEP APART".

Gayatri Srinivasan started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five and was trained in the Kalakshetra style by Jayalakshmi Eshwar from Abhinay- Delhi and Krishnaveni Lakshmanan from Kalakshetra- Madras. In addition, she learnt nattuvangam from Kamala Rani of Kalakshetra. Gayatri is interested in all dance styles and in applying their influence to her choreography. Besides bharatanatyam, Gayatri has learnt jazz, social dance and some folk dances of India. She enjoys teaching and developing new choreography. Nattuvangam
Gaurishankar Chandrashekar has learnt the mridangam for 15 years and has over 10 years of accompaniment experience for Carnatic music and dance concerts in Bombay, India and the New England region of the United States. He had basic mridangam training for 6 years from Sri. Kalyanakrishnan, a prime disciple of Sri. Tanjore Upendran. Gaurishankar had his intermediate training from the late Sri. Trichy Raghava Iyer of Bharatiya School of Music and Arts in Matunga, Bombay. Sri. Trichy Raghava Iyer was the elder brother of Sri Panchapakesa Iyer, a genius in his own field of vocal music. He also had the great opportunity of advancing his mridangam skills under the able guidance of Kalaimamani Tiruvarur Bhakathavatsalam during his recent visit to the United States. Tiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam appreciated him for his kala pramanam and ease with which he handles the instrument.  Gaurishankar plays other percussion instruments such as the dholak, congo and kanjira with expertise. He lives in Framingham, Massachusetts. Mridangam
Vivek Rudrapatna is a sophomore at Harvard College studying Neurobiology/Biophysics and a native of Basking Ridge, NJ. He began his study of violin in western classical music at age 8, and continued his study through local school orchestras through high school.  At 11, he began the study of Carnatic music under Sri Mysore Sateesh, a torchbearer of the MSG violin bani. Vivek pursued further training under Mysore Ganesh Kumar, B.U. Ganesh Prasad, and the world-renowned duet violinists Mysore Nagaraj and Manjunath. 8.5 years and scores of concerts later, Vivek is still very much a student, learning under Vidwan Anantha Krishnan whenever he gets breaks from college.
